Introduction to Global South Studies IGSS
Course Description
5 credits
Course Code: 812158
Target Group:
Open for students finalizing their bachelors/ early in masters with a right to study at the University of Helsinki.
Timing:
The course will be held during the academic year 2012-2013 in I and II periods, on Fridays 7.9.-14.12.2012 at 10-12. Lectures in the first period will be held
at the Center campus (University main building, Hall 5), and in the second period at the Viikki campus (Info center, Hall 2).
The course serves as an introduction to the Global South Minor Program and to other, multidisciplinary studies related to global development.
Registration:
Until 14.9.2012
Preceding studies:
Minimum three years of studies in one´s major subject.
Objective:
To present various disciplines´ approaches to development and to working in developing countries. The course will cater for multidisciplinary learning and
familiarize the students with the Global South related studies offered and research conducted at the various faculties of the University of Helsinki.
Contents:
Learning about development and developing countries from expert lecturers coming from within and outside the university.
Study material and literature:
Study material will be presented at the course and will be available in Moodle- domain.
Completion:
Motivation letter written at enrolment. Group work on lectures and in Moodle. Attendance on lectures minimum 70%.
Evaluation:
Based on the written group assignments. Pass/Fail.
