PHYSICAL SCIENCE CARLIN HIGH SCHOOL Ms. Jones mjones@ecsdnv.net COURSE OBJECTIVE Physical science is a laboratory science course that includes two units; chemistry and physics. Chemistry is the science of matter and its changes. It deals with what matter is, atomic structure, the periodic table, structure of matter, and chemical reactions. Physics is the science of forces and energy. This unit deals with motion, force, work, heat, and waves. We will see how our daily lives are affected by both of these sciences as we move through the year. COURSE OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Process a variety of scientific information Select the problem, hypothesis, data, control, and conclusion of an experiment Recognize and classify structure of matter and chemical reactions Compare the structures and functions of chemical bonds Describe different forces and energy Develop their psychomotor skills in laboratory exercises COURSE MATERIALS You will need to bring with you every day: 1. 2. 3. 4. 1” three ringed binder 70-100 page spiral Interactive Notebook Pen/Pencil Textbook **If you do not have a pen/pencil, you can buy a pencil for 25¢. COURSE GRADING SCALE Your grade will be based on formative and summative assignments. Formative assignments include your homework, Daily Science, quizzes, discussions, etc. Summative assignments include your self-reflection papers, tests, projects, and class laboratories. Grading Scale: 100-90% = A 89-80% = B 79-70% = C 69-60% = D 59-0% = F CLASSROOM PHILOSOPHY I am here to help you reach and exceed your academic goals in science. I am here to provide students the best knowledge at which I can give to enable him/her to excel in their learning process. Some class periods will be planned for you, while others will allow you to work on assignments or laboratories. The classroom is NEVER a student lounge. This is not time for you to visit or gossip with your classmates. We will work bell to bell. DO NOT have the misconception that just because you completed assignments in the A, B, or C layer that you will receive these grades. The work that you are submitting needs to be completed to the assignment expectation and have high quality workmanship, originality, and creativeness. It will also be important for you to access and use Canvas, the districts learning management system. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS The following class policies are non-negotiable. See the instructor if you have any concerns with your ability to follow these policies. ATTENDANCE AND TARDIES It is important that you be in class. Your participation is valued. Nothing can take the place of being in class, hearing the lectures, seeing the demonstrations and videos, doing the laboratory experiments, and interacting with your classmates. If it is necessary for you to be absent from class, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get the missed information. You will be held responsible for everything that went on in class. You will also need to pick up handouts that were given out. ***TARDY POLICY*** You are expected to be in your seat and ready to start when the bell rings (completing the daily bell work, with backpacks under your seat). We will start on time. If you are not in your seat you will be considered tardy. HOMEWORK Homework will be given and will be collected as specified by the instructor. 1. You may use pen (blue or black) or pencil on your homework and lab write-ups. Handwriting must be legible. If I can’t read an answer, I will mark it wrong. 2. Homework is due at the beginning of the period, unless otherwise stated. 3. Homework is to be an individual effort unless otherwise directed. Do not loan your homework to any other student. If your homework is caught with someone else, both students will receive a zero for the assignment. CONTACT INFORMATION Ms. Melissa Jones mjones@ecsdnv.net (775)754-6317
