MICROBIOLOGY CARLIN HIGH SCHOOL Ms. Jones mjones@ecsdnv.net COURSE OBJECTIVE The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with those concepts that are basic to viruses, prokaryotic cells, and eukaryotic cells. Lecture is the foundation of the course. Laboratories will not always coincide with the lecture topics, as the laboratories are designed to give the student a foundation of basic laboratory techniques necessary for microbiology. COURSE OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Compare and distinguish the basic groups of microbes, including prokaryotic microbes (Archaea, Bacteria), and Viruses, and eukaryotic microbes. Draw a typical microbial growth curve, and predict the effect of different environmental conditions on the curve. Compare and contrast eukaryotic and prokaryotic genomes, and gene expression in each group. List different types of symbiotic interactions between microbes and other organisms, including commensalism, mutualism, and parasitism, and provide examples of each. Summarize common features of microbial pathogens, with emphasis on bacterial and viral pathogens. Summarize mechanisms of animal defenses to infection, including primary defenses, innate immunity, and acquired immunity. Compare and contrast beneficial and harmful uses of organisms, including applications in biotechnology and bioterrorism. COURSE GRADING SCALE Your grade will be based on formative and summative assignments. Formative assignments include your homework, Daily Science, quizzes, discussions, etc. Summative assignments include your papers, tests, projects, and class laboratories. Grading Scale: 100-90% = A 89-80% = B 79-70% = C 69-60% = D 59-0% = F CLASSROOM PHILOSOPHY I am here to help you reach and exceed your academic goals in science. I am here to provide students the best knowledge at which I can give to enable him/her to excel in their learning process. Some class periods will be planned for you, while others will allow you to work on assignments or laboratories. The classroom is NEVER a student lounge. This is not time for you to visit or gossip with your classmates. We will work bell to bell. DO NOT have the misconception that just because you completed assignments you will receive high grades. The work that you are submitting needs to be completed to the assignment expectation and have high quality workmanship, originality, and creativeness. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS The following class policies are non-negotiable. See the instructor if you have any concerns with your ability to follow these policies. ATTENDANCE AND TARDIES It is important that you be in class. Your participation is valued. Nothing can take the place of being in class, hearing the lectures, seeing the demonstrations and videos, doing the laboratory experiments, and interacting with your classmates. If it is necessary for you to be absent from class, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to get the missed information. You will be held responsible for everything that went on in class. You will also need to pick up handouts that were given out. ***TARDY POLICY*** You are expected to be in your seat and ready to start when the bell rings (completing the daily bell work, with backpacks under your seat). We will start on time. If you are not in your seat you will be considered tardy. HOMEWORK Homework will be given and will be collected as specified by the instructor. 1. You may use pen (blue or black) or pencil on your homework and lab write-ups. Handwriting must be legible. If I can’t read an answer, I will mark it wrong. 2. Homework is due at the beginning of the period, unless otherwise stated. 3. Homework is to be an individual effort unless otherwise directed. Do not loan your homework to any other student. If your homework is caught with someone else, both students will receive a zero for the assignment. 4. Absolutely no late work will be accepted.
