The collection is to remain at Huntington Library Archives. The collection is open to the public at the discretion of Huntington Library. The collection may be viewed by appointment only. Historical Note: In 1908 Harold Bruce Forsythe was born in Georgia. At the age five, Forsythe moved to Los Angeles. Forsythe attended Manual Arts High School and attended Julliard Graduate School on a fellowship. He studied at Julliard in classical piano and composition from 1927-1928. After his training at Julliard he returned to Los Angeles. Forsythe collaborated with William Grant Still to compose the operas The Sorcerer and Blue Steel. Forsythe’s career as a composer ended in 1940 when he became fully deaf. Forsythe also was an author of poems, essays, short stories and he wrote a novel. When his career as a composer and musician ended, he supported his self through horticulture. Harold Bruce Forsythe died in 1976. Scope: The collection contains information about Harold Bruce Forsythe and his family. The collection covers his birth to his death. Harold Bruce Forsythe was a well-known composer. He composed operas with William Grant Still and wrote several manuscripts.
