Lesson 2 of 2: Earth’s Revolution Lesson Title: AZ Teaching Standard: AZ Science 5 S6C2PO3 Lesson Outcome: TSW demonstrate how the earth revolves on its’ orbit and describe how that revolution creates a calendar year. Evidence: Create an illustration that shows the seasons of the year, and Earth’s position relative to the Sun during those seasons. Big Idea: Man’s attempt to understand and manipulate the world Materials: Globe, Flashlight, Fifth Grade Science Instructional Period 1 Notebook Sub-Objective SET: TSW identify that the Earth makes one trip around the Sun in one calendar year. TSW correctly demonstrate the process of Earth’s revolution. Teacher Actions Participants Actions √for Understanding TTW show Rotation and Revolution clip, provide the prompt “One year on Earth is equal to…” Quick write to complete prompt. Reasonable answer; revolution around the Sun, or similar. TTW ask for 2 volunteers: one to be the sun, the other to be the Earth. TTW ask the sun to stand in the middle, and the Earth to walk in a large circle around the Sun. Ask the Sun to continue to point the flashlight at the Earth. Ask the Earth to stop at 4 points along the orbit. Identify those points as the 4 seasons that we experience on Earth. 2 Students will come to the front of the class. One student (Earth) will walk in a circle around the Sun (without rotation). The Sun will continue to point at the Earth as the Earth revolves. The Earth will stop when asked. Together with the teacher and the class determine what season they are demonstrating. One student is the Sun, the other the Earth. The Sun stands in the middle, the Earth walks in a large circle around the Sun. The Earth stops when asked. Earth and the class correctly identify the seasons as he revolves. TSW create an illustration showing the Earth in relationship to the Sun during the start of the four seasons. TTW ask students to recreate an illustration to show the location of the Earth on its orbit around the Sun, labeling the four seasons. Illustrate the orbit of the Earth around the Sun and label the four seasons. Illustrations correctly showing the path of the Earth along its orbit and the seasons of the year.
