Tens and Ones TEACHERS: SUBJECT: L. Buskirk Number and Operations in Base Ten STANDARD: K.NBT.1 Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones. OBJECTIVE (EXPLICIT): TSW decompose numbers from 11-20. EVIDENCE OF MASTERY (MEASURABLE): Recording Sheets (Ten frames) BEFORE SUB-OBJECTIVES, SWBAT (SEQUENCED FROM BASIC TO COMPLEX): KEY VOCABULARY: MATERIALS: Double 10 frame worksheet Unifix cubes (Two sets of 10 per student) crayons ENGAGE (MAKE CONTENT AND LEARNING RELEVANT TO REAL LIFE AND CONNECT TO STUDENT INTEREST) TTW say, “Sara is putting away the glue in a bin. Ten bottles of glue fit in a bin. There are 12 bottles of glue on the table. If Sara fills the first bin, how many bottles of glue will be in the second bin?” TTW record student responses on the white board. TTW say, “Today we will try to prove whether our answers are right or wrong. Let’s try the first problem.” Choose two students to model as partners with unifix cubes and ten frame work mats. As partners, have the students count out (orally) and snap 12 cubes together. Students will then unsnap the cubes to fill the first ten frame(bin) and continue by placing the remaining cubes on the second ten frame. TTW say, “How many cubes are in the top ten frame? How many are in the bottom ten frame? Lets count to make sure we still have 12.” TTW say, “How many bottles of glue would Sara have in the second bin?” STUDENT WILL: The students will thinkpair-share and conclude how many bottles of glue would be in the second bin. TSW listen as teacher speaks. Watch the two students model with unifix cubes and the ten frames. TSW count with teacher to verify quanity is still 12. TSW respond “10.” TSW respond “2.” TSW respond “2.” CO-TEACHING STRATEGY IF APPLICABLE DURING TTW say, “Now, you are going to answer some other problems with youir partner. Work together to answer as many as you can before the time is up. Are there any questions?” Students will work with a partner to answer the problems on the sheets provided. TSW work with a partner using cubes to show how to decompose 6 different numbers that will be given by the teacher (14,16,8,19,11,6). Each student will then record how they decomposed three numbers on their sheets by marking with crayons and an “x” to show their thinking/problem solving. (one student records 3 of the numbers, the partner records the other 3 numbers) AFTER CO-TEACHING STRATEGY IF APPLICABLE TTW say “What patterns/similarities did you STUDENT WILL: discover when decomposing the numbers.” TSW determine that when it is a “Lets remember Sara and the glue. How “teen”number you will need to use two many bins did she use to put away the bins.Students should recognize the pattern glue? Why did she need two? Look at your that every teen number is written with a problems, When did you need two bins, 1(ten) and ends with the digit that is first when did you need one bin?” stated (additional ones).
