Media Release Monday, 29 April 2013 Calling all volunteers to Moonee Valley’s planting days Moonee Valley City Council invites the local community to help plant trees and other indigenous plants in their local parks and reserves at its 2013 planting events, taking place from May to September. Moonee Valley Mayor Cr Narelle Sharpe said the annual planting days gave all Moonee Valley residents an opportunity to do something for the environment. “Each year Council, together with the local community and environment groups, plants more than 12,000 locally indigenous plants during our annual planting days,” Cr Sharpe said. “They are a great opportunity for residents of all ages to help make their neighbourhood green and beautiful while learning more about sustainable gardening practices at the same time.” To take part in the planting, residents are asked to bring along gloves and drinking water, and to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Light refreshments will be provided. Council’s Environmental Sustainability portfolio holder Cr Shirley Cornish said anyone could volunteer at one of the local planting days and spend a fun day out helping to create a greener local environment. “In years to come you’ll be able to point at a tree and have the satisfaction of saying you planted it,” Cr Cornish said. The community planting days include a World Environment Day event for local schools at Debneys Park, Flemington on Wednesday, 5 June and National Tree Day at Aberfeldie Park on Sunday, 28 July.
