This edition includes details on the Draft Essendon Junction Structure Plan on consultation today until 17 July, and an update on our housing future in Moonee Valley. Cr Narelle Sharpe Moonee Valley Mayor DRAFT ESSENDON JUNCTION STRUCTURE PLAN Council has developed a draft Essendon Junction Structure Plan and is calling for community feedback. Essendon Junction is a nominated neighbourhood activity centre. This means it will continue to grow and accommodate more people and more homes. Council’s role is to develop a long-term plan, called a structure plan, for the centre which will guide any changes and ensure that: • • • • growth is managed appropriately new locations for community facilities are identified transport infrastructure improvements are coordinated there is a clear advocacy plan for State Government projects Find out more at the following events: Information session: Thursday, 25 June 2015, 6pm to 8pm Drop-in sessions: Thursday, 2 July 2015, any time between 12 noon to 5pm or Saturday, 4 July 2015, any time between 10am to 2pm Venue: Ukrainian House, 3-11 Russell Street, Essendon View the draft plan and have your say at mvcc.vic.gov.au/essendonjunction or call Strategic Planning on 9243 8888.The deadline for feedback is Friday, 17 July 2015. MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS Essendon Airport Auto Centre | Stage 3 In the northern precinct of the Essendon Airport site, the AutoCentre covers approximately 10 hectares. It is proposed to provide car dealerships and associated car storage, service centre, food premises and car parking, as identified in the Essendon Airport Master Plan 2013. Stage 3 of the AutoCentre required approval for the removal of Natural Temperate Grassland of the Victorian Volcanic Plain. The Department of Environment has granted approval to the proposal in accordance with the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Infrastructure works have now commenced on the site and are expected to take six months. More major developments….. To read the latest information on other major developments affecting our city visit our website LONG TERM PLANNING Nominate a significant tree Council will again be reviewing its’ Significant Tree Register, which helps protect significant trees in the local area, to ensure it stays up to date. The cut-off date for nominations this year is 30 June 2015. An independent review of both the existing register and newly nominated trees will then take place. Any new additions to the register would then be implemented through a planning scheme amendment which seeks to apply a planning control known as an Environmental Significance Overlay (Schedule 2) to trees identified as being significant. Housing Strategy Update Consultation on the draft Housing Issues and Opportunities Paper closes today Friday, 5 June. A report will be put to Council in July summarising the feedback received, as well as outlining the next steps. Feedback will be used to help inform the development of the new Moonee Valley Housing Strategy. HERITAGE Thematic Places Heritage Overlays (C142) Council has recently received approval for Moonee Valley Planning Scheme Amendment C142. This amendment applies the Heritage Overlay to 14 places (including one group of properties) and one precinct at 2-20 Levien Street, Essendon. This amendment implements the findings of the Thematic Places Heritage Study 2012-14. Consultation on this study occurred in late 2013.. COMMUNITY CORNER Spirit award nominations open! You have the chance to shine the light on someone doing great things in Moonee Valley. Nominations for Council’s prestigious Spirit of Moonee Valley Community Awards open on 15 June! This year we are recognising outstanding contributions in the following categories: Arts and Culture, Environment, Family, Neighbourhood, Older Persons, Sport, Contribution by Business to the Community, and Contribution by Youth. WHAT'S ON Moonee Ponds Junction tram stop upgrade When: Thursday 25 June 2015, 4.30pm – 6.30pm Where: The Clocktower Centre, 750 Mt Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds Yarra Trams are proposing to build raised platform stops at Moonee Ponds Junction. Celebrating the courage of refugees When: 14 – 20 June 2015 Where: Across Moonee Valley The theme for Refugee Week (14 to 20 June) is ‘with courage let us all combine’. Council respects and supports our many residents who have come to Australia as refugees or asylum seekers, and will proudly fly banners across the city proclaiming Moonee Valley as a ‘Refugee Welcome Zone’.
