Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
November 11, 2012
The LORD keeps faith forever,
secures justice for the oppressed,
gives food to the hungry.
— Psalm 146:7
Recently on November 1, we celebrated All Saints Day. That is the
day that we remember our loved
ones who have passed on to their
eternal reward.
A few weeks ago on October 21,
Pope Benedict XVI canonized seven men and women
to sainthood. The names of the new saints are: Kateri
Tekakwitha, Marianne Cope, Pedro Calungsod,
Jacques Berthieu, Giovanni Battista Piamarta, Carmen
Salles y Barangueras and Anna Schaffer.
St. Kateri Tekakwitha known affectionately as the
“Lily of the Mohawks,” was born in 1656 in what is
now upstate New York. Her mother, an Algonquin,
was a Christian; her father, an Iroquois, was not. Both
parents and her brother died of smallpox when Kateri
was only four; she herself suffered facial scarring and
impaired vision from the disease, which generally
weakened her health for the rest of her life. Kateri’s
uncle, a member of the Mohawk tribe, took her in after
her parents died. As a child, she encountered the
teachings of Jesuit missionaries and decided to become a Christian when she was eighteen years old.
Baptized at the age of twenty, Kateri subsequently
suffered persecution from her tribe, who ostracized her
so intently that she left for a Jesuit mission located
south of present-day Montreal, where she lived among
other Christian converts until her death at the age of
24. Known for her purity, Kateri vowed a life of virginity and penance. She is the first Native American to
be canonized a saint, and the patroness of ecologists
and environmentalists, as well as those who have lost
their parents and those ridiculed for their piety. Her
feast day is July 14.
Kateri Tekakwitha was a remarkable individual of virtue. As you can see in the midst of her serious health
problems she was courageous on her faith-filled spiritual journey. She is a remarkable example for all of us
to follow especially when we start feeling sorry for
ourselves in the midst of the crosses that we may have
to carry. I will continue to the life of the other recently
canonized saints. Remember, we are all called to holiness and saintliness. Are we answering the call? God
Bless you and the family.

Living the Mass:
How One Hour a Week Can Change Your Life
Living the Mass compellingly demonstrates how
the one hour spent at Mass on Sunday can truly
transform how we think and act the other 167
hours of the week. Ideal for Catholics who haven’t
been to Mass in a while, for the many who attend
Mass simply out of habit, or for anyone who desires to gain an understanding of how the Mass
prepares each person to live day in and day out as
a baptized Catholic Christian.
This Group Discussion Series is on
Tuesday November13th at 7 pm in
the Parish Life Center.
We will continue to collect non-perishable food
items. Please place your food items in the
baskets underneath the tables in the vestibule.

CONFIRMATION
The Sacrament of Confirmation is a two year program. All students attending Public School must
register with the Parish School of Religion as soon
as they enter ninth grade. They will not be accepted into the confirmation class in 11th grade
unless they completed the previous two years. This
is very important.
Advertising in the Family Pictorial Directory
If you or someone you know is interested in advertising in the Pictorial Directory, drop off a business
card in the Parish Office and we will forward the
information to Lifetouch Photography. All the proceeds from the advertising will come to the parish.
The cost for advertising your business is $100.00.
If we fill a page with ten advertisers, that will be
$1000.00 for Holy Spirit Parish. I hope that you
will allow The Pictorial Directory to give exposure
to your business through advertising.
