Tekakwitha Conference 2013
Friends of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha,
Praise and thanksgiving to our Creator God from whom all blessings flow was the atmosphere that so many of
our 2013 Conference participants lived in El Paso this past July.
We express our gratitude to Bishop Mark Seitz and his Diocesan Staff for the role each one played to prepare
and host the 74th Annual Tekakwitha Conference.
To our brothers and sisters of Ysleta del Sur Pueblo with their warm, friendly hospitality and tireless efforts that led us to truly
Celebrate Faith, Culture and Tradition, we say “Thank You.” Another ‘Thanks’ to volunteers from Region 4 Kateri Circles and
helpers from other Regions who are always ready to assist in the Registration and Conference Sales areas each year.
During the Regional Meetings, participants focused on furthering the Vision and Mission Statements of the Tekakwitha
Conference and discussed ways the Vision and Mission could be carried out by the Goals recently revised by the Board Members.
As we journey toward the closing of the Year of Faith, how will you move forward faithfully and creatively to seek new ways and
opportunities to be more effective evangelizers in your daily lives?
Which of the Tekakwitha Conference goals will you personally choose? Which goal will your Kateri Circle and/or prayer group
focus for a deeper faith experience this year? You are encouraged to review the goals listed below and the Spirit will guide and
lead you to new spiritual horizons...
May your days be filled with God’s blessings.
In Saint Kateri Tekakwith we pray,
Sister Kateri Mitchell

Dear Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Family,
Some of you are aware that for the past 12 years, a number of past and present Tekakwitha Board of Directors have
requested that potential sites be explored for the relocation of the Tekakwitha Conference National Office.
Properties have been assessed in all of these suggested states: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Nebraska,
Kansas, Oklahoma, Alabama, New York, and more recently Louisiana, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Some
of these property owners were interested in renting/leasing and others in selling. The Board approved that we should look for a
‘permanent home’ for our new Saint’s National Tekakwitha Office and purchase a suitable and affordable property that can serve
as a new office owned by the Conference.
T he property most practical for a small business like ours, affordable for purchase was one located in Alexandria, Louisiana.
T he time frame for closing the office in Great Falls after 34 years is at the end of October 2013 and projected travel to Alexandria
around November 1st or 2nd.
During October there will be packing and the many details involved when such a move takes place. Therefore, the Great Falls
office will be closed for business from October 1, 2013 to November 30, 2013.
You will be notified when the new Saint Kateri Tekakwitha home in Alexandria will be ready for our usual day-to-day business
hours via e-mail sometime in late November 2013.
T he new office mailing address after November 1, 2013 is: 2225 North Bolton Avenue, Alexandria, Louisiana 71301. We will keep
our same e-mail and website addresses. The phone and fax numbers will change.
I ask for your prayers and consideration as we begin the monumental tasks of packing and moving.
The Board and I thank you for your continued support, and pray Saint Kateri guide us as we relocate.
God’s blessings to all through the intercession of Saint Kateri,
Sister Kateri
For all that has been we give thanks. After 34 years at 1800 9th Avenue South in Great Falls, Montana, the Tekakwitha Conference
National Office will be relocating to 2225 North Bolton Avenue in Alexandria, Louisiana on October 31, 2013. Various Tekakwitha
Conference Board of Directors began to contemplate a new home for this national office for the last twelve years. A new home for
our patroness’ national center has now been found in the South.
On behalf of the Tekakwitha Conference membership, I want to express sincerest gratitude to the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings,
Montana. Firstly, to the late Bishop Murphy who offered office space rent free to establish the first headquarters for a Tekakwitha
Conference National Center at the Villa Housing units at 1800 9th Avenue South. Subsequently, Bishop Anthony Milone continued
to support this endeavor who now is enjoying his retirement in his home state of Nebraska. Since then, Bishop Michael Warfel
was named Ordinary to this Diocese of Eastern Montana and he has even come to the office to ‘break bread with us’. He dined
with staff and even enjoyed some “homemade Mohawk corn soup”.
For the many ways the diocesan staff has reached out to the Tekakwitha Conference staff since 1979, we are most grateful.
For all the friendships we have made in and around the Diocese and in the City of Great Falls, we bid farewell and ask God to
continue to bless each and everyone.
As we say, “thank you, so long,” may God bless you in your faith journey and ask for your prayers as we move to another state.
We look forward to a “future filled with hope” as we carry on our mission of evangelization in a new home for the Tekakwitha
Conference National Office in Alexandria, Louisiana.
With gratitude in Christ through the intercession of Saint Kateri,
Sister Kateri Mitchell
Executive Director

Saint Kateri Prayer
By: Harold Caldwell
O Saint Kateri, Lily of the Mohawks,
Your love for Jesus, so strong,
so steadfast, grant that
we may become like you.
Your short and painful life showed us
your strength and humility.
Grant that we may become forever
humble like you.
Like the bright and shining stars at night,
we pray that your light may forever shine
down upon us, giving light,
hope, peacefulness and serenity
in our darkest moments.
Fill our hearts, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha
with your same love for Jesus
and grant us your strength and courage
to become one like you in Heaven.
Amen.
Saint Kateri Walk With Us
Grandfather, Great Spirit, look at our
brokenness.
We know that in all creation only the human
family has strayed from the Sacred Way.
We know that we are the ones who are
divided and we are the ones who must come
back together to walk in the Sacred Way.
Grandfather, Sacred One, teach us love,
compassion, and honor, so we may heal the
earth and heal each other.
From the Ojibwe

“What was lost is now found…”
In 1794, the Russian Orthodox Church initiated a mission to the Native peoples of Alaska.
In celebration, the missionaries build the first Russian Orthodox Church in the western
hemisphere: Holy Resurrection on Kodiak Island Alaska. They installed a specially made
300 pound bell in the Church. Then quite mysteriously, the bell made its way to the
Roman Catholic Mission Church of San Fernando Rio de España, north of Los Angeles in
the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1948.
In 1988 Cardinal Mahoney of Los Angeles gave permission for the bell to be loaned back to the Orthodox Church of Alaska to
celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of Russian Orthodoxy. However, the bell did not travel to Alaska, the loan was never completed.
The history of the San Fernando bell was revealed during the cooperative research
conducted by Father Ray Bucko, SJ and an historian of the Russian Orthodox Church.
When the story came to light, the Archdioceses of Los Angeles decided to return the bell
to the Native Orthodox Peoples of North America as a sign of unity, and of the continuing
reconciliation between the two Faiths.
Father Bucko, a good friend of the Native People, chose the 74th Tekakwitha Conference
to return the bell to its original home of Kodiak Island. Father Ray believed the
Conference would be an ideal place to hold the ceremony because of the significant
representation of Native Catholics in the Tekakwitha Conference.
So, accompanied by a drum roll by the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo drummers,
Archbishop Chaput presented a picture of the bell to His Excellency
Archbishop Benjamin of the Russian Orthodox Church, symbolically returning
the bell to its first home.
The actual bell has since been returned to Kodiak Island, flown there by
Alaska Airlines and now resides with the Native Peoples of the Russian
Orthodox Church.

Friday, September 12, 2014
Depart from your gateway city for Albany, NY. Upon arrival transfer to Auriesville where the Mohawk
Indian woman, Kateri Tekakwitha, was born, before arriving in Fonda where she lived in nearby
Caughnawaga (“by the rapids”). Mass will be at the Shrine in Fonda. Dinner and overnight stay in Albany.
Saturday, September 13, 2014
After breakfast in the hotel, you will depart for Trois Rivieres, stopping in Kahnawake for a visit of the tomb of Saint
Kateri before arriving at the Shrine of Notre-Dame-du-Cape where Mass will be celebrated. Moving on to the
shores of the St. Lawrence River, you will find
Cape de la Madeleine, a place of peace and tranquility, serenity and beauty and a history going back to 1634. Jesuit
Missionaries served the settlers of the new village here, building a little timber chapel in 1659. Five years later it
would become the first of Canada’s Catholic churches to be dedicated as a Confraternity of the Holy Rosary.
Overnight stay in Mason de la Madone (or similar).
Sunday, September 14, 2014
After breakfast in the hotel, you will head for the Shrine of St. Anne de Beaupre’ where Mass will be celebrated in
her basilica. On the guided tour of the basilica, you will see a depiction of St. Anne, known as the Statue of
Miracles, where pilgrims place their prayers of petition at its base. In the museum you will be shown the annals of
devotion to St. Anne down through the centuries, and participate in the Stations of the Cross before an enjoyable
dinner. In the evening, you will join in the Rosary and take part in the Candlelight Procession. Dinner and overnight
stay at the Basilica Inn.
Monday, September 15, 2014
After breakfast in the hotel, you will travel to Quebec City for a scenic tour of this multi-cultural city of
French and English flavors and stop to visit its basilica. Continue on to Montréal for a visit of the Basilica
of Notre Dame where today’s Mass will be celebrated. You will enjoy the spectacle of a show of lights
titled, “And then there was light,” which invites you on a journey through time on the wings of great
white butterflies suspended from the vaulted ceiling of the basilica. From your headphones, you will
hear a captivating story narrated by the church’s architect. Overnight stay in Montreal.
Tuesday, September 16, 2014
After breakfast in the hotel, you will visit St. Joseph Oratory, the largest in Canada, where Mass will be celebrated. The Oratory's dome is the
third-largest of its kind in the world after the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in the Ivory Coast, and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. In 1904, St.
André Bessette began construction of a small chapel on the side of the mountain near Notre Dame College which later grew into a larger
church. But, because of the number of visitors it received, a yet larger church was needed and completed in 1917. By 1967, the basilica was
completed. A reliquary in the church museum contains St. André's heart, which he requested be given as a protection for the basilica. Your
afternoon is at leisure. Do not miss the famous botanic garden. Overnight stay in your hotel.

Wednesday, September 17, 2014
After breakfast in the hotel, you’ll depart for
Auriesville, NY, birthplace of Kateri
Tekakwitha, stopping for a luncheon on the
way. Mass will be celebrated at The National
Shrine of the North American Martyrs, also
known as the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs.
This was dedicated to the Jesuit missionaries
who were martyred at the Mohawk Indian
village of Ossernenon between 1642 and 1646.
In the late evening you will continue on the
short ride to Albany for dinner and overnight.
Thursday, September 18, 2014

Dakota. The institute is sponsored by the National Tekakwitha Conference. It will
begin on Monday, June 16, 2014, at 6:00 PM (Mountain Daylight Time) with
supper and end on Monday, June 23 at 11:00 AM, with departures to the Rapid
City airport after lunch.
Airport shuttle service will only be available at these times: pickup ONLY on
Monday afternoon, June 16. Please schedule your flight to arrive at Rapid City
Regional Airport between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The return to the airport is
ONLY on Monday, June 23 ( schedule your departing flight no earlier than 1:00
PM). The cost of the round-trip shuttle service – in addition to tuition -- is
$50.00, payable in advance or upon arrival at the Center. Call the Director about
your travel plans, if you have questions.
There will be 31 hours of class work associated with the workshop. Speakers will cover topics that
include missiology, anthropology, liturgy, catechetics, collaborative ministry, Native culture and
religion, and principles of recovery using AA. Native speakers involved in catechetics, parish
administration, and youth ministry will discuss their work. Although the institute will take place in a
Lakota setting, it will develop basic principles of inculturation that can be used in approaching any
culture.
