Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT, FORESTS AND CLIMATE CHANGE be
pleased to state:
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)
whether the Government has any plan to undertake survey of polluting
industrial units located in the cities situated on the banks of the Ganga and
Yamuna;
if so, the details thereof;
whether the Government is contemplating to start the procedure for removal
of those identified industries, which are polluting Ganga and Yamuna
rivers; and
if so, the details thereof?

(a)
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has inventorised Grossly Polluting
Industries (GPIs) in 5 states on the main stem of River Ganga and its tributaries i.e.
Kali-east and Ramganga as well as Yamuna.
(b)
The state-wise and sector-wise status of Grossly Polluted Industries GPIs in
Ganga basin is given at Annexure. The industries discharging effluents in Yamuna at
Haryana are 1211 and in Uttar Pradesh these are 2381.
(c) & (d)
As per Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, Air
(Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 and Environment (Protection) Act,
1986, non-compliant industries can be directed to close operation till they take steps
to achieve compliance with environmental standards; however, removal is not
provided in the aforesaid Acts.
