Research Project Summary
The health economics group would be interested in supervising PhD research which is in line with our
three main research areas:
• Applying economic evaluation frameworks to NHS priority setting challenges and to assessment
of public health and health care interventions and those promoting broader aspects of wellbeing;
• Developing methods to explore and quantify the preferences and values of patients and
populations with respect to health service provision; and
• Extending methodological and applied approaches to evaluation of projects and innovations in
the Third Sector.
Within GCU, our main collaborators in economic evaluation are from NMAHP (Nursing, Midwifery and
Allied Health Professions Research Unit), rehabilitation sciences and vision sciences, with whom we aim
to develop programmes of work in health economics. We will consider other health areas for practical
application of economic evaluation methods.
With respect to our work on preferences, we have specific interests in: distributional equity and the
relative value of quality-adjusted life years; social views and values of health gains at the end of life; and
the foundations and application of techniques such as standard gamble, time trade off, willingness to pay
and person trade-off. We are interested in mixed methods studies combining quantitative measures
and/or qualitative methods to better understand preferences.
