Research Project Summary
Social enterprise is recognised as a growing part of local economies and an increasingly important feature of
public policy. In many countries social enterprises are considered as examples of organisations able to drive
economic growth, support disadvantaged areas and groups, and contribute to the reform of public
services. However, whilst policy discourses tend to be dominated by universalised models of social enterprise,
comparative empirical studies are increasingly evidencing the geographical variety in social enterprise
experiences.
We need a greater understanding of what determines the variation in social enterprise development and
sustainability from context to context; whether and how different geographies influence the potential for
social enterprise to develop and grow; what constitutes an enabling environment for social enterprise
sustainability; what impacts on social enterprise performance in place; and how successful examples can be
transferred to different contexts in respect of their local determinants. We are therefore keen to hear from
people interested in undertaking doctoral research on these broad topics.
The Yunus Centre for Social Business and Health is an interdisciplinary research centre, home to researchers
from disciplines including economics, geography, politics, sociology and social policy. Our academics have
expertise in a wide range of quantitative and qualitative research methods. PhD students will work alongside
these academic staff and be part of a thriving cohort of doctoral students studying in similar areas.
