Week of: August 5th – 9th Word Study Our word study program is undergoing some changes. We will begin word study in early September. Please stay tuned for more information to come. Snacks As a grade level, we do not conduct a snack time. Students may bring an individual snack to eat at recess. Please be mindful when choosing a snack that 3rd grade does have several students with peanut/nut allergies. Language Arts Focus: Types of Sentences This week we will focus on the 4 types of sentences (declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory) Writing Focus: Opinion In writing we will begin learning about how to write an opinion piece. Students will be writing several short opinion entries in their journals this week. Quizzes and Tests None this week Reading Focus Book: Because of Winn-Dixie By: Kate DiCamillo Our class will be reading this book for the 1st 9 weeks. We will be previewing the book this week. Vocabulary Words 1. produce- a section in the supermarket where fruits and vegetables are kept 2. sermon- a talk on a religious or moral subject given during a church service and based on a passage from the Bible 3. missionary- a person sent on a religious mission to promote Christianity in a foreign country 4. aisle- a passage between shelves of goods in a supermarket or other building. 5. orphans- a child whose parents are deceased or abandoned 6. exception- excluded; not a part of 7. fortunate-favored by or involving good luck or fortune; lucky Vocabulary quiz will be next Friday (8/16/13) The newsletter is continued on the back of this page. Unit 1: Numbers and Operations in Base-Ten This week we will be working on answering the following essential questions: How are digits in a number related? How is place value related to multiples of ten? What can we learn about the value of a number by examining its digits? Why is place value important? This week in math we will begin covering Unit 1: Numbers and Operations in Base-Ten. Please remember to review homework and practice math facts nightly with your child. We are already practicing for the 1st Math Challenge. The 1st Math Challenge will cover 90 multiplication facts. They must get 81 correct in 4 minutes. We will be starting with the zeroes, ones, twos, and fives (all facts that can be solved by skip counting) In science this week, we will begin Chapter 1 on Rocks and Minerals. We will be learning about the five properties of minerals and the three types of rocks. The students will also complete experiments that help them to identify rocks and minerals, as well as learn about the rock cycle. Please look for the science homework packet and review it with your child. Social Studies We will be covering a small amount of Social Studies material daily in addition to our other Science or Social Studies Units. We will cover map skills over the next few weeks. We will cover the following skills: map title, map key, compass rose, cardinal directions, intermediate directions, map grid, latitude & longitude, map scale, mountains & rivers, and different types of maps.
