New Year 2016
Welcome back and Happy New Year to all families associated with
Caragh N.S.
Over the Christmas holidays, we were saddened by the death of
two past staff members. Mrs K. O’Neill and Mr Eddie O’Donnell.
Mrs Kathleen O’Neill taught in Caragh N.S, from the mid 1950’s
until 1991 and was principal for many of those year. Her influence
on the development of the school was immense and she had
maintained her link with the school right through her retirement.
The Board of Management, Staff and pupils formed a guard of
honour at her funeral and extend sincere sympathy to her family.
Mr. Eddie O’Donnell, Ballybay, Co. Monaghan will be fondly
remembered by many past pupils and staff. He was a member of
staff in the early 1980’s and brought a unique style of teaching and
outlook on life, to the school. We extend our sympathy to his
family also. He passed away in early Dec. after a long illness.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha delse.

PEACE PROMS
Parents Association
This year, for the first time, pupils from 5th class are taking part
in an exciting musical experience called Peace Proms. Some
five hundred schools from North and South will perform in the
Main Hall RDS in February, with the Cross Border Orchestra of
Ireland. Since October we’ve been learning an exciting
repertoire of songs including classics like John Lennon’s
‘Imagine’, current hits such as ‘Uptown Funk’ and ‘Shake It off’
and a medley of songs from the musical ‘Matilda’. Our
performance will take place on Saturday, February 6th at 2pm
and tickets are available from www.peaceproms.com.
A new Parents Association Committee has been formed. Thanks to
the outgoing committee for their hard work and commitment. A
draft policy document on Parents as Partners is available on the
school website for the consideration of all parents. The Parents
Association in conjunction with the school raised a total of €20,000
over the past year and half. This money has been used towards
payment for the New Area of Astro Turf.
A huge well done to the 34 pupils representing Caragh NS who
shone at their workshop in Dublin this week and did their
school proud!
During 2016 smaller fund-raisers are planned. Details to follow.
We are continuing with the Brown Money Collection. Each
class has a collection bottle with a prize for the class that
collects the most. So please send in your unwanted brown
money.
Volunteers are needed for the Confirmation and First Communion
parties in April and May. More details later.
Green School ...
We recycle batteries - Weee collection boxes around the school
On Friday the 8th of January, 6th class attended the BT Young
Science & Technology exhibition. At 8:30am the bus departed
Caragh for Dublin.
When we arrived at the RDS everyone got off the bus and walked
towards the BT arena. Everyone took their seats and we
watched The David Meade Show. Jack Noonan and Mr Corkery were
selected from the audience to take part in one of his mind reading
experiments.
When the show was over everybody left the arena and went to
observe all the different types of scientific projects from the
secondary schools around the country such as a project on ‘What is
Scoliosis?’
We watched Robot Wars where two robots battled it out for ring
domination. When the show was over we went to look at the various
company stands. Nicky Byrne and Jenny Greene from 2fm were
broadcasting live from the venue. Google, RTE, W5 and Intel all had
large stands with extremely interesting demonstrations.
At 1:30pm we met up to get on the bus. It was a fantastic trip and
has been a tradition for many years and we hope this continues. Our
whole class really enjoyed it and we will never forget the day.
