Chabot College February 1994 Removed Fall 2010 Course Outline for Geology 1B HISTORICAL GEOLOGY Catalog Description: 1B - Historical Geology 4 units Evolutionary geology of earth. Emphasis on sedimentary processes, sedimentary rocks, their fossils and structures. Prerequisite: Geology 1A or 10. 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory. [Typical contact hours: lecture 52.5, laboratory 52.5] Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. define the principles governing an interpretation of earth history; 2. recognize several important fossils and know their environmental habits, as well as their ages; 3. explain the fundamentals of interpreting the history of the earth through correlating ancient sediments with current sedimentary environments; 4. explain the fundamentals of studying the history of life through correlating ancient fossil animals with current fossil animals; 5. describe the geologic history of the Northern American continent; 6. describe the elements and basic observations leading to the current plate tectonic theory; 7. become familiar with the geologic time scale and understand the methods of radiometric dating; 8. know the theories involved with interpreting geological history; 9. become acquainted with interpretation of geologic history from geological maps.
