Cathy Dyer April 2014
Problem: Determine the maiden name of Barbara Deierlein and town in Bavaria before emigration to
Michigan. Most documents list her husband’s name and her first name. Some say Raustock or
Ronstock and two others Brendel. Based on age at marriage and first child, it is not likely that she was
previously married. Both surnames are found in Bavaria. This is my mitochondrial line.
Timeline:
1824/5 birth in Bavaria Barbara Raustock/Ronstock or Brendel.
marriage ca. 1852
1852 immigration per 1900 census and listing: Bremen to NY 15 May 1852 Georg Deuerleins farmer
b. ca.1826 age 25 and 6/12 and Barbara R_____________ Ronstock? (hard to read) age 24 The
ancestry index says Burnstok, but I enlarged it and it is an R
Look at the record. Were they married when they traveled? See rest of page… (Ancestry.com)
Is it possible they married in NY?
Germany took what are called “departure lists” – those from Breman prior to 1907 were destroyed
however. See http://www.progenealogists.com/germany/articles/gdepart.htm
1853 Feb birth of Peter in Detroit; His birthplace comes from his death record and may be accurate, but
it was provided probably by a spouse or son or daughter who is going only by his or her understanding.
1855 Aug birth of Anna ditto, but because someone in her family thought the same thing, it adds
weight to the supposition that Detroit is correct.
If so, they should be in Detroit 1853-1855. Are there City Directories for that year?
https://sites.google.com/site/onlinedirectorysite/Home/usa/mi/wayne
1857 Mar birth of Eva – from 1900 census record.
1860 May birth of Margaretha Grosse Pointe, MI – ditto; place of birth from death record.
1860 census cannot locate them after extensive search of index
See some search strategies – not that any of them were successful.
1864 Nov birth of Herman Warren, MI
1867 Feb birth of Helena Roseville, MI
Births were not recorded in Michigan until 1867—and then not completely. There may be church
records.
1870 Oct birth of Mary K Warren, MI
1870 census Geo, Barbara, Anna age 15, then Eva and Margaret are missing (ages 12 and 10) but they
list Ephriam male age 12 and Israel male age 10 and Earnest age 8! Why make your girls into boys? Was
this a census recording/ transcription error? then Herman and Helena are correct. They could have had
an Ernst-dates work if he died young. Yes… Barbara had 8 (according to George’s death cert) or 9
(according to 1900 census) children, only 6 of whom survived. And where is Peter?
What is the very first thing you notice about this census record?
1875 plat map – I assume in Macomb Co.
ca 1878 Peter marries at age 23 to Adeline Holley – is this the Adeline Holley, dau of Hansford & Dorcas
Ellis Holley who lived in Hamtramack, Wayne Co. 1860 and 1870? Note how close Hamtramick is to
Detroit and Grosse Point.
1880 census Geo, Barbara an Anna age 17, Margaret 19, Lena, Herman and and Mary age 9.
1882 Geo and Barbara were baptism sponsors - her surname not listed -- Who was the child? Which
church? Tell us a little about finding and using these records.
1887 marr of Helena
1891 marr of Mary for both marriages father is George Deierlein and mother Barbara ________.
Why blank if she is alive?
1891 marriage of Herman both MI record and Macomb co record clearly list her name as Brendel –
state record is created from county record.
1891 baptism sponsors - her surname not listed – baptism of who?
1895 plat map
1897 death of Margaret obit does not mention parents
1900 census both with son Herman and his family
This census tells us he is naturalized.
Can we find the naturalization record?
See what family history library has…
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/680565?availability=Family%20History%20Library -- this is the
declaration of intention
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/233706?availability=Family%20History%20Library -- this is the
naturalization record. I hope the petition.
And look at this one!

Is a trip to Lansing in order?
He may have been naturalized through Macomb County Courts, not Wayne County. But they are in
Lansing too.. https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/726924?availability=Family%20History%20Library
-- but see index online at Seeking Michigan (use my Michigan page to find it)
1904 his death obit? none found thru index
He died in Macomb Co. and he had a son living in Detroit/Grosse Pointe. Which newspapers should we
check?
1908 death of Herman certificate says Barbara BRENDEL -- and it was from Herman’s marriage record
that also found this name. Who was the informant on his death cert?
Sometimes we must rely on a proof argument. But we still want to find out how the name Brendel fits
in.
will and testament of George no surname for her, no place in Bavaria
1909 her death St Peter’s Lutheran record reads: Barbara Deierlein geb. Raustock (geb. is short for
born in German)
her obit does not give maiden name nor town in Bavaria
Her death record should be available at SeekingMichigan.org. – I couldn’t find it so I used Family Search
to get the spelling to use in the SeekingMichigan search box
Here is the actual certificate then from SeekingMichigan
Note: her daughter Anna is the informant, but does not know the names of her mother’s parents.
1920 death of Eva mother’s surname not listed
1930 death of Anna
mother’s surname RONSTOCK – who was informant?
1942 death of Peter
mother’s surname not listed
1951 death of Helena mother’s surname not listed
ALL trees on Ancestry and Family Search only go as far as I do. All say BRENDEL based on Herman’s info.
Other Deierleins in the US came from area around Nuremburg Bavaria.
