Going GREEN at Murray Hill Academy Recycle Recycling is not new to NYC. Throughout the 1880's, 75% of NYC's waste was dumped into the Atlantic Ocean. In 1895, Commissioner George Waring instituted a waste management plan that eliminated ocean dumping and mandated recycling. Reduce Recycling is critical to reducing the quantity of waste that New York City sends to landfills and incinerators. But recycling is not the same as waste prevention. Waste prevention means actually eliminating or reducing the quantity of materials discarded, either as trash or recyclables. Reuse Make donations at: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/html/stuff/getrid.shtml Dispose of hazardous materials (batteries, cell phones) properly. Many manufacturers are required by NYS law to take certain items back: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/html/stuff/disposal.shtml Recycle old electronics via door-to-door pick ups: www.4thbin.com Learn about these NYC composting programs, as well as some basic info on the science and mechanics of indoor and outdoor composting at http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/html/compost/composting_nyc.shtml Here’s how we can help at MHA: Recycle your plastic, glass and foil in marked receptacles in the teacher’s lounge and the cafeteria. (No take-out containers or utensils please). Recycle paper in cardboard bins located in every classroom. (Tape and staples are ok). Save and use scrap paper. We all make mistakes when making copies ;) There will be a marked tray near the copier in Ms. Shraga’s outer office for paper that has only been copied on one side but is no longer needed. Feel free to take some to use in your classrooms! Yippee! Dead batteries… Remind your students of our recycling policy when they discard trash. Unplug electronics such as Smart Boards overnight. Contact Ms. Koestler if you have any questions or suggestions. Thanks for ‘pitching in’ at MHA! Or, you can always join The Green Team! We are committed to helping MHA practice habits of sustainability. By equipping all rooms with recycling receptacles and spreading awareness, our goal is to encourage faculty and students to consider the social, economic and environmental aspects of our actions. This year, we entered our first Green Cup Challenge; as a school we reduced our energy by 13% during Cycle 1. See Ms. Koestler if you want to help us save even more this year! Be a part of MHA’s GREEN TEAM! Let’s help MHA be as GREEN as we can be! Renew, Reuse, Recycle! Our first mission: create a website to show students and teachers how MHA recycles. Sign Up with Ms. Koestler in room 813 Meeting times are TBD.
