Course Description: In this course students will continue to develop and enhance acquired skills from levels I & II. Students will focus on reading primary prose sources that illuminate the history and culture of Rome during the period of the golden age of Latin literature, the fall of the Republic, and the formation of the Roman Empire. A greater emphasis will be placed on self-expression and attaining an acceptable degree of written proficiency for communication in Latin. II.Course Objectives: 1. Ability to communicate in Latin via the use of verbs in all six tenses in both the indicative and subjunctive moods 2. Acquisition of more complicated grammatical structures specific to the target language, including conditional sentences and indirect speech 3. Ability to analyze the culture of Ancient Rome through the writings of primary authors and contrast ideals of Roman political factions 4. Make connections between the ancient world and our modern society 5. Compare the styles of Roman rhetoric with modern day speeches and similar culture issues found in both 6. Identify English derivatives of Latin words commonly used in Latin prose III.Classroom Expectations: – Students will be expected to maintain their integrity. – All students must actively participate in their own learning, in and out of the classroom and come to class prepared. – All students must show respect to the peers, teachers, and guests. – All students should ask for help when needed and be prepared to work with/assist classmates when appropriate. Accommodations: Requests for accommodations for this course or any school event are welcomed from students and parents. Concerning laptop utilization: 1. Student laptops should not be hard wired to the network or have print capabilities. 2. Use of discs, flash drives, jump drives, or other USB devices will not be allowed on Madison City computers. 3. Neither the teacher, nor the school is responsible for broken, stolen, or lost laptops. 4. Laptops and other electronic devices will be used at the individual discretion of the teacher. IV. Grading Policy: Daily grades will be 30% of your nine week grade. Test, Project & Quiz grades will be 70% of your nine week grade. The final exam is worth one-fifth of your final average. *Parents and students will be notified if any changes to the grading policy are made. Make-up Test Policy: It is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements for all missed work. I will try to hold all quiz and test make-ups during Refuel hour. VI.
