TO PARENTS/CAREGIVERS OF 2015 YEAR 7/8 MUSIC EXTENSION STUDENTS
Welcome to Music at Shenton. We are looking forward to meeting you and your child and
having you involved in this exciting part of Shenton life. We have a large music program with
graded Concert Bands, Classical Guitar Ensembles, Jazz Bands, Vocal Ensembles, String
Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra.
All students who enrol in the Music Extension Program must be
already learning an instrument and have experience in music reading.
Students involved in the Shenton Music Extension program will be in one of the
following categories. Some students may be in both.
PRIVATE INSTRUMENTAL LESSONS
Some students in the Shenton Music program are already learning their instrument privately.
Students in this situation should continue with their private lessons. There may be limited
School of Instrumental Music (SIM) (school based lessons) places available for oboe,
bassoon, saxophone, tuba, euphonium, percussion, vocal and horn. At this stage we
have not been given our 2015 new instrument allocation information. We are
expecting a reduction in new instrument allocation from previous years and so may
not be able to meet all requests. Further information regarding tryout sessions in 2015 will
be given to your child during class music and at a parent meeting on February 19 2015 at
7pm*.
Private music students will play in the Shenton Ensemble/s which is most suited to their level
and will take Music Extension Class Music. It is anticipated that private piano students will
have the opportunity to play in a piano recital later in the Semester.
SCHOOL OF INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC (SIM) STUDENTS
Most Music Extension students at Shenton are involved in the SIM program. Places are
given in the primary school in years 3, 4, or 5/6. These students automatically transfer to the
Shenton SIM program and are taught by 12 Instrumental specialists.
Changing Instruments There will be limited School of Instrumental Music (SIM) places
available to change to oboe, bassoon, saxophone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, vocal
and Horn. We have large numbers of existing flute, clarinet and trumpet students
transferring to Shenton in year 7 and 8. Students, who have shown proficiency on these
instruments and are interested in being considered to change to one of the new instruments
listed above, are encouraged to attend the try out sessions in 2015. At this stage we have
not been given our 2015 new instrument allocation information. We are expecting a
reduction in new instrument allocation from previous years and so may not be able to
meet all requests. Information regarding this will be given to your child during class music
at a parent meeting on February 19 at 7pm*.
SIM students will play in the Shenton ensemble/s, which is most suited to their level and will
take Music Extension Class Music.
Year 7/8 Music Extension Parent/Caregiver Meeting – TO BE CONFIRMED
