Research Expertise and Skills

Research Expertise History

My main expertise is in optimal experiment design, dynamic system identification and controller design. My developed methods have been implemented to internal combustion engines modeling and control. The developed dynamic models are used for model-based engine calibration and control, and the accuracy of the models can be further improved by my proposed methodologies of experiment design and identification.

In my PhD I have developed advanced methods of optimal test signal design, model structure selection and parameter estimation for identification and have proved these as effective in

WAVE-RT model based Matlab simulations. I have the capability in the use of various model types in identification including polynomial, neural network and multi-linear models and also am able to use corresponding methodologies of selecting the model regression. Based on the determined model structure, I am capable of designing optimal input signals with maximized data information in order to further improve the model accuracy. Since simulation models are popular in model-based calibration and control, I also adapted the conventional prediction error based parameter estimation methods, such as ordinary square method, for better estimation accuracy in simulation models. Developed dynamic engine models include fuel, torque and emissions (NOx and PM) etc. Moreover, I have plenty of experience in controller design. I am able to design controllers by various algorithms in order to satisfy the practical requirements for engine control, e.g. tracking the desired engine speed and brake torque.

I have been working as a research assistant (associate) of the university of Liverpool for a project named CO

reduction through emissions optimization (CREO). We have developed a methodology of using dynamic model and dynamic model-based calibration (based on an inverse identification of the optimal engine behavior) to achieve the best fuel economy with constraint in the engine torque and emissions. The optimization toolbox (Matlab) is selected to solve the constrained optimization problems in the project and I am able to design objective functions and constraints according to different experiment requirements. I am also very familiar with various numerical optimization algorithms and design of feedforward/feedback controllers. I have developed skills in the use of WAVE and WAVE-RT modeling of IC engines and have an in-depth

knowledge of the calibration parameters and their effect on the fuel consumption, engine torque and emissions.
