Meet with your counselor for a graduation check. Some counselors are just sending for students in
class to meet with them informally. Others are sending home letters to invite parents. If your parents
want to be involved have them call your counselor for an appointment.

Start asking teachers, counselors, and/or employers for letters of recommendation. Don’t ask unless
your college/university/scholarship committee requires them. If your college or university doesn’t
require a letter, do not pad your application materials with unnecessary documents. Be courteous in
giving those writing the letter of recommendation at least 2 weeks.
Check the Highland webpage for a link to the counseling center. There is information and links to
college and scholarship searches, test preparation for ACT/SAT, Utah Futures, and NCAA eligibility
center.
Narrow down your college list to 5 – 7 colleges that you will want to apply to – begin filling the
applications that have the earliest deadlines. Create a spreadsheet that lists all your prospective
colleges, listing each item that needs to be submitted, and their deadlines.
Record on your spreadsheet your progress in completing application requirements.
Register for the October ACT or SAT I October exam in early September (to avoid the late fee) if you
haven’t yet taken a test or if you want to improve your score.
Remember that college deadlines are firm! Test scores must be in before the deadline or you will not
be considered for admission or scholarships.
Check early decision deadlines.
Talk to college representatives as they visit Highland. College and military reps set up tables in the
Ram Foyer during both lunches. Listen for PA / HTVS announcements re: visiting reps. Watch the
marquee outside for college visits or talk to Christie Divver in D106 for more information.
Go on college visits. Spend time on different campuses to make sure it is a good fit for you.
Get involved in extracurricular activities, both in and out of school.
If you plan to play competitive sports at a Division I or II school you must register for the NCAA
Eligibility Center. If you did not register with the NCAA in your junior year, you must register ASAP.
See John Vallentine or Sierra Collins for more information.
Attend the Post High School Tour College Day at Highland on September 14, 2015.
Attend the National College Fair at Corner Canyon High School on September 26, 2015. Register for
the fair at www.gotocollegefairs.com. There are workshops that you can register for.
