If you plan to graduate midyear, please stop by the counseling office and pick up an intent form. Intent forms are due by 10/30/11 to Mr.

F INALIZE YOUR SCHEDULE

If you have any missing periods on your schedule, please schedule an appointment with your counselor. Criminal Justice may be offered again in the spring so if you would like to add it or replace another elective, please talk to your counselor.

W HICH D EADLINE ?

This year, several colleges have moved to an earlier deadline, anticipating more in state applicants. Oct. 15 is the first set deadline date.

If you choose to apply to the Oct. 15 th deadline, make sure you are confident in both your SAT or ACT scores and GPA. Most colleges will accept the Oct 1 SAT scores, but will not accept the Oct 22 ACT or Nov. 5 SAT scores as part of this submission deadline. Check with your specific colleges or school counselor if you have questions about which deadline is best for you.

Apply!!! Most schools are already accepting applications. Many schools have priority deadlines in October and November. Schools with Rolling Admission allow students to submit an application and receive quick notification.

Early action can benefit students who have not settled on one choice. You get to apply to as many as you want and still find out early. Early deadlines can help your chances, but be careful when applying for early decision. Early decision is a binding agreement which means that if you are accepted, you will withdraw your applications from other colleges and come to that college.

Check

Choose wisely! Select 3-5 schools (average) including your “dream” choice, a “safety,” and a few in between. Check your colleges’ website

SELECTING A COLLEGE

Choose wisely! Select 3-5 schools (average) including your “dream” choice, a “safety,” and a few in between. Check your colleges’ website to be sure that you meet the minimum admission requirements. Some more selective schools may require one or more SAT subject tests (Duke etc.). The College Board has a tool called

“College Matchmaker” which will help you quickly profile schools. Stop by the counseling office if you would like to have our assessment of your list of schools.

SOCIAL NETWORKING

College Admissions reps and scholarship foundations are beginning to look at social networking pages. “Colleges are more likely to use these tools for recruiting rather than spying,” says Christina Wood of

Careersandcolleges.com. However, you want to keep your blogs clean. You never know who will be looking.

COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK

CFNC is sponsoring college application week.

Many colleges waive their application fee during the week of Nov. 14-18. Winston-Salem State and

Elizabeth City State are the two public institutions that have waived their fees. Twentytwo Independent colleges have waived it as well.

Stop by counseling or check out CFNC.org

TRANSCRIPTS

Try out the Transcript Manager on CFNC.org to send your transcripts to NC colleges. Make sure your NC wise # (lunch) is part of your basic profile. It’s easy and free! If you are applying to colleges out-of-state or prefer mailing your transcript, please stop by counseling and sign up for a paper transcript. Pay $3 and return within

24 hours to pick it up. Do not open the seal and put it in the mail to the colleges of your choice.

The final way to submit transcripts is for your counselor to upload your transcript. Counselors can upload transcripts for schools that use

Commonapp.org, Sendedu (WCU), and Docufid.
