College Calendar – 12th Grade October Make an appointment to meet with your guidance counselor. Ask teachers to write recommendations. By asking early, you give teachers time to write and avoid any last minute requests to meet deadlines. Make sure you have registered for any college admissions tests you need to take (SAT, ACT, SAT subject tests) Keep your grades up! Colleges pay close attention to grades for 11th grade and the first semester of 12th grade Work on your essay. This is the part of the application where most students procrastinate. Write your essay first, then work on the rest of your application. Ask your English teacher to review your essay before you submit it. November If you are applying early to any colleges, do not miss the early decision/early action deadlines. Most of these are in November. Once your first quarter grades are available in early November, you should start applying to colleges. Do not miss deadlines for December college admissions tests. December Complete all applications with January deadlines and send them in on time. All requests for supporting documents (transcripts, recommendations, etc) for applications with 1/1 deadline must be made to the guidance office by 12/12. The guidance office will not be open 12/20-1/4. Remind your parents to attend the Financial Aid Night in December. This is of particular importance to families who have not been through this process before. Apply for your PIN number (both student and parent) at www.pin.ed.gov. This number lets you apply for aid with the FAFSA form (used at every college in the U.S.) and lets you sign your online FAFSA. If applicable, register for the CSS/Financial Aid Profile. Many private colleges use this form to disperse institutional aid. January Submit your FAFSA as soon after 1/1/11 as possible. Continue with the college application process. Continue to work at getting the best grades possible. February Many colleges have application deadlines in February; make sure you meet the deadline for your schools. Attend the meeting on local scholarships in the guidance office. If your college requires mid-year grades make sure you request that the guidance office sends them.
