Montgomery County Public Schools, the largest school district in Maryland and the 16th largest school district in the nation, consistently presents high energy demands in its facilities. One of the biggest concerns confronting the county currently is the amount of energy and resources wasted, that could potentially be renewed. For this purpose, our team is dedicated to generate awareness for this aspect. Here are some tips on how to go green: Saving a little everyday = saving a LOT. RMHS SERT is a student-run schoolwide effort to promote recycling, energy conservation, and usage of renewable energy. We plan to do this through morning announcements on RMBC, poster displays, science research, and environmental awareness events and competitions. Turn off lights when not in use. Turn off computers when not in use. No, turning them to Stand By mode is not the same as turning them off. Make sure to manually turn off your computers instead of shutting them down through automated systems, this can potentially save 50% of the energy. Leave your lawn clippings on your lawn and/or get a free composting bin from Montgomery County (locations here) as a way to naturally fertilize your lawn and keep it healthy without using potentially environmentally harmful fertilizers. Open your blinds in the morning, especially during the winter, using natural energy instead of artificial lighting saves LOTS of energy Recycle your lunch supplies! Remember that paper trays, milk cartons, and plastic bottles are all recyclable! Take Lessons beyond the Classroom Because of widespread support for our mission from both school administrators and MCPS SERT staff, we were able to expand environmentalism from indoor to outdoor. With the help of hundreds of students and the guidance of teachers, our team led the construction of a rain garden last May by the school-bus parking lots to offset carbon emissions by busses and increase water conservation. We, the 2000 strong students who worked to green our school, are the beneficiaries of a cleaner, more beautiful environment. Contact us at rmhs.sert@gmail.com!
