Journeys in Engineering, Technology and Science Saturday, December 1, 2012 9:30 AM -2:00 PM Event Information for Sponsors and Presenters Objective The Journeys in Engineering, Technology and Science event seeks to energize middle school students about careers in science and technology while relating the presentations to the middle school science curriculum. The event will also provide information regarding academic pathways and programs available to students in order to be prepared to join the workforce in science and engineering industries. Parental participation and follow-up communications such as newsletters and website resources will strengthen the impact of this experience for students. Target Audience All middle school students from Montgomery County Public Schools will be invited to attend. We will market this event to them through science teachers, counselors, and various school district events. In addition, their parents, teachers, and school counselors will be encouraged to participate. One of the key target groups is those students in middle school that may not be planning to attend college or even consider a scientific career. Approximately 40 percent of those that attended last year were from this population. Agenda Science and Technology companies and agencies will provide interactive hands-on sessions from 9:30 AM until 2:00 PM for students and parents highlighting interesting science and technology applications, careers in STEM, and how students can stay engaged in scientific curriculum throughout their education. Opening Sessions – 9:30 – 10:30 – Two opening sessions will be conducted with the participants split in two groups. For example one of the opening session topics is may be a Spectacular Science Demonstration of fireworks and amazing chemical reactions. The other may be a demonstration and motivational talk from a Scientist or Astronaut Two subject tracks of Small-Group Hands-on Technical Sessions - offered during two time periods at 10:45 – 11:25 and 11:40 – 12:20. The track topics are Bioscience and Medicine, Engineering and Environmental Science, and Computer Science. STEM Pathways Expo- 12:20-2:00 - providing High School and College program and curriculum and career information along with Science Demonstrations in many areas including robotics, computer programming, fire science, and engineering, bioscience, cyber security. Results from the 2011 JETS Day Event The Universities at Shady Grove (USG) together with Montgomery College and Montgomery County Public Schools presented Journeys in Engineering, Technology and Science (JETS) Day for more than 400 Montgomery County students and 350 parents on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2010. Participating students tried out a variety of different activities including acting as crime scene investigative (CSI) agents, working with a robot, and designing and developing video games. Students also had the opportunity to meet with engineers and scientists from more than 30 participating companies including Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Discovery, and Human Genome Sciences.
