WIAA COACHES’ SCHOOL PRESENTATION/JULY, 2011 Provide an early season practice schedule! THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE DETAILS! STORIES/DICK DEVENZIO/TWO BOOKS/GANON BAKER What is (are) your ultimate team goal(s)? BRIAN KELLY Define THE PLAN to get there. ___________________________________________________________________ Which coaches present would be elated with a .500 season? Why we play the way we do! Early 90’s CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE NOT WON ON THE NIGHT OF A BIG EVENT, BUT YEARS BEFORE BY ATHLETES WHO COMMIT THEMSELVES TO CHAMPIONSHIP PRINCIPLES! KIDS MUST BE TAUGHT HOW TO COMPETE! DEFINE YOUR EMPHASIS! (IT IS MUCH EASIER TO SLOW DOWN A GAME THAN TO SPEED IT UP!) WE PLAY EVERY POSSESSION! Expectations: 1. 2. 3. 4. A Knight player does not skip practice. A Knight player does not schedule appointments during practice times. A Knight player is never larger than the tradition and excellence of Knight basketball. A Knight player does not compromise the dedication to the team by participating in code-violating activities. 5. A Knight player makes no excuses! Academic eligibility is a prerequisite to playing Knight basketball. 6. A Knight player challenges adversity and views conflict as an opportunity for Godly growth and maturity. 7. A Knight player demonstrates Christian discipline/commitment both when someone is watching and when no one is watching. God has blessed us with a tremendous opportunity. What will we do with this gift? _____________________________________________________________________________________ PROGRESSION/”It’s not difficult to be good on a “good” day; but what about the bad days? TOO MANY ASSUMPTIONS-WAY TOO MANY! This was a serious error I made as a young coach. “NO SADDER WORDS BY TONGUE OR PEN THEN THESE FOUR WORDS, ‘WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN.’” WOULDA…, COULDA…, SHOULDA…,/DID! INSTRUCT/TEACH THE GAME! DOES THE TEAM DESERVE TO WIN? PITINO OFFENSIVE BALL POSSESSION/”Land Loaded, Live Low” & “Private Property”, Triple Attack/Fakes Dribbling Lines, Alleyball-You must teach daily!, 1-2, 2-3, 5-10, etc… Passing Lines-Two Balls, Catch/Land-Finish Tough, 1-2’s and Quicks SHOT SELECTION/”But, Coach, I can make that shot!”/A game of finite possessions “Bad shots, probably more than anything else, lose basketball games, yet bad shots are ridiculously common. Go to any playground and you will see more bad shots taken than good shots. Players seem to love taking bad shots. Winning teams are most often the teams who pass up shots and wait for better ones. What is the difference between a 45% shot and a 60% shot? Not much. A bit more time. A step closer in. A bit more confidence and certainty about the one. Yet again, the 60% shot wins and the 45% shot loses.” Dick DeVenzio Teach/Rate Shot Selection IMAGINATION ADVANTAGE/PREPARATION TO PLAY THE BEST/THE DETAILS -PLAN-Goal Setting (CAN WE WIN THE LEAGUE TITLE, THE DISTRICT TITLE, AND PLAY ON SATURDAY LATE IN THE DAY AT THE ARENA?) “If you want to go where you have never gone, you must prepare as you have never prepared.” MORNING PRACTICES ACH, Colton, Garfield-Palouse, Moses Lake Christian, and the “unknowns” OFFENSIVE VARIETY PLAYER MATURITY “The difference between an immature athlete and mature athlete is one hour.” Dick DeVenzio ADVERSITY/AN OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE Championships are won on the road! This is our opportunity to shine!! DEFENSIVE “Most players, even lazy ones, give the impression they are ready to play good defense during the first 5-10 seconds of a possession. No cuts to guard, no man to chase, no screens to get over or through, no fakes to worry about. One or two passes and a shot goes up.” What becomes painfully obvious?
