Working with gold nanoparticle films made in a Langmuir trough to create Janus nanoparticles by conducting a ligand exchange on the surface of the particles. The Janus particles are then studied by using a PM-IRRAS to characterize if a ligand exchange was accomplished. “Fabrication and Evaluation of Gold Nanoparticle Films for Enhanced Performance of Photovoltaic Materials” With Dr. Jennifer Dahl, CHEM & MSCI, UWEC, 2014-present. Study of alkanecapped gold nanoparticle films fabricated in a Langmuir trough useful for increasing efficiency in photovoltaic cells. Projects Thermodynamics Projects. For Dr. Marcus McEllistrem (CHEM & MSCI) UWEC, Fall 2014. “Understanding Two Theoretical Models of Quantum and Empirical.” Synthesis of cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanoparticles to use in the determination of their band gap via UV-Vis and Fluorescence. Calculations of nanoparticle size were done using the two theoretical models. Empirical model according to W.W. Yu, Chem. Mater., 2003, 15 (14), and the quantum model according to L. Brus, J. Phys. Chem., 1986, 90 (12). “Different Phase Segregation in Aluminum Copper Alloy is Dependent on Composition.” Worked with six different compositions of aluminum copper alloy (1%, 3%, 10%, 18.5%, 25%, and 30% copper to aluminum) and cooled at 0.5⁰C/minute to determine the effect the composition had on the morphology of the sample. Characterization Projects. For Douglas Dunham, MSCI, UWEC. Fall 2014. “Unknown Alloy Characterization.” Used XRF, SEM, and EDS to determine the composition of a competitor’s tin-bismuth product. “Determining Identity of White Powder.” After a possible incident of someone being allergic to the white powder lying next to a coffee cup analysis using XRD shows the mystery powder to be the sweetener Equal. 1 “Determining Oxide thickness on an Aluminum Sample.” Used Brian Strohmeier’s article “An ESCA Method for Determining the Oxide Thickness on Aluminum Alloys,” (Surface &Interface Analysis, 1990.) to determine the oxide thickness on aluminum. XPS data taken provided us with information to calculate the oxide thickness which proved to be what the article claimed. “Characterization of Tennis Rackets showing Performance and Marketing Differences.” Experimenting on three different tennis racquets (Head Ti 55, Tour Slam, and Liquid metal) using XRF, SEM, EDS, and a light microscope showed us data on how the composition and structure of the racquets can be used to enhance the performance along with marketing techniques. “Surface Topography of a Plastic Commercial Product.” Testing an unknown commercial using AFM and SEM to categorize the surface structure. “Delamination at Phase Boundaries Created by Nanoindentation.” Experimentation of nanoindentation on a polished tin-bismuth alloy and analyzing delamination at the phase boundaries using SEM. “Evaluation of Proposed Idea that Micro Beads Enter Great Lakes by Sewage Run Off.” Collection of micro beads from face and body wash and tested to see if exposure to hot water would dissolve the beads. Both stereoscope and SEM images were taken before and after to see relative changes in bead diameter.
