Counseling 12-Personal Growth and Development
A comprehensive course that integrates personal and professional growth through the development of effective
communication skills, positive self-image and self esteem, and strategies for problem solving and decision
making. Analysis of life course events, such as the development of career and educational objectives.
Emphasis is on personal health assessment and strategies for coping with stress.
Outcomes: At the end of the course the
Student should be able to:
Identify and evaluate positive and negative
Individual characteristics that impact
Personal, academic and professional success
Implement successful strategies for decision
Making in a personal, academic or professional
Apply successful goal setting and action planning
Strategies to a personal, academic or professional
Situations.
Identify behaviors that undermine personal health

Course Objectives:
Demonstrate positive interpersonal communication skills by utilizing effective verbal and
Non-verbal techniques.
Verbalize how self-image impacts personal success and well being.
Identity factors that contribute to positive self-esteem as well as barriers that inhibit its
Development.
Utilize various decision-making and problem solving models and apply them to personal
And professional situations.
Be able to set specific clearly defined goals.
Assess wellness concepts including factors that promote positive mental and physical
Health.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Identify and evaluate positive and negative individual characteristics that impact personal, academic and
professional success, apply successful goal setting and action planning strategies and implement
successful strategies for decision making in such situations. Overarching College Outcomes: personal
development, Social Responsibility, Communication and Cognitive
Students will demonstrate this by:
a. Completing self-quizzes from the text & class activities: indentifying personal characteristics
applicable to specific student.
b. Participating in group discussions.
Implement successful strategies for enhancing self-image, self esteem, emotional IQ and other factors,
that impact the individual and actions that can be taken to improve maturate the student. Overarching
College Outcomes: Personal Development, Information and Cognitive Competencies.
Students will demonstrate this by:
a. Completing a series of assessments
b. Participating in class discussions
c. Applying strategies for positive behaviors
Identify behaviors that undermine personal health and develop an individualized action plan for
improvement of personal well-being. Overarching College Outcomes: Personal development, information,
Cognitive and communication Competencies.
Students will demonstrate this by:
a. Taking Personality Assessment
b. Creating a wellness action plan

Turn off all electronic devices (You know what they are)
Ask as many questions as you can think of
Participate actively in class discussions and projects
Complete all homework, reading and journals before class
Be polite and respect your learning environment and fellow students
Contribute POSTIVELY to the learning process for yourself and those around you. (No Class Clowns)
Come to class well rested and with a positive ATTITUDE
Raise your hand when you have a comment to make or question
DO NOT……….
Talk while the professor is speaking
Talk when other students are speaking or presenting
Disrespect yourself and your classmates by being rude
Use profane language or demean people in the classroom
Share what is said in our experiences together with others. We have a safe, trusting and confidential
environment
Work on homework during class
FYI……
Class homework will only be accepted one day late, you will receive credit for turning it in. But NO POINTS
will be given.
There is no way to make up quizzes so it is important to show up the day of the quiz.
Leaving early or repeatedly arriving late will affect your final grade.
