Arcos, Inc. Receives $750k Army Contract for Burn Resuscitation Decision Support
System
HOUSTON, June 28, 2011 -- Arcos, Inc. announced today that it entered into a $750k
cooperative agreement contract with the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity
(USAMRAA) to develop the Burn Resuscitation Decision Support System (BRDSS). The
BRDSS is a patented decision support tool to aid fluid resuscitation of serious burn victims. The
underlying technology was developed by the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research
(USAISR) Combat Critical Care Engineering (C3E) group and has been in clinical use at the
Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for a few years. Arcos' role in the cooperative
agreement is to develop and obtain FDA 510(k) clearance for a portable tablet version of the
technology.
Jose Salinas, Ph.D., program manager for C3E task area at the USAISR, said, "The BRDSS will
allow the clinical expertise of the USAISR burn center to be extended to the critical phase of
early treatment and evacuation in a user friendly package that can be easily used by clinical
providers. We believe that this system will improve burn care and outcomes for all our soldiers,
airmen, sailors, and marines injured in the line of duty."
Chris Meador, CEO of Arcos, added, "We are delighted to be working with the Army on this
important project. Many burn victims, inside and outside the Department of Defense, can benefit
from an individualized, precise fluid resuscitation. We look forward to continuing the excellent
work started at USAISR."
