Media Center Policies and Procedures The mission of the Indian Knoll Media Center is to teach students to be effective users of ideas and information, to encourage reading for pleasure, and to promote enthusiastic, lifelong learning. Hours: The media center is open for teachers and students Monday through Friday from 7:20 A. M. until 3:00 P. M. Please do not send students to the media center during the morning announcements. Students may check out books beginning at 8:00 A.M. Checkout Procedures for Students: Students in kindergarten and first grade may check out one book at a time. Students in second through sixth grades may check out two books at a time. All books must be checked out using Destiny, our computerized checkout program. Students will use their student identification numbers to check out books. Books may be checked out for two weeks, and may be renewed or returned at any time. Students who have an overdue book may not check out another book until the overdue book is returned. Late fees are not charged. Overdue notices will be printed once a month. All books must be returned to the media center two weeks before school is dismissed for the summer. Students cannot checkout newspapers but may come to the Media Center to read them. In addition, AV materials, items in the professional section, reference materials, and equipment may not be checked out by students. Checkout Procedures for Teachers: There is no limit on checkout for teachers. However, please return materials in a timely manner so that others may use them. All books must be checked out using Destiny, our computerized checkout program. If no one is available to check out materials, and you do not need them right away, you may stack the items on the circulation desk. Please put your name on a sticky note on the top of the stack. After the items are checked out, the teacher will be notified that the materials are ready to be picked up or the items will be delivered to the classroom if a volunteer is available. If you do need the materials right away, please write your name, number and the title and bar code number of all materials that you are checking out on the clipboard check out sheet by the computer on the circulation desk. Checkout Procedures for Equipment: All equipment should be checked out before it is removed from the media center. Please be sure that equipment is kept secure in the classroom. Only teachers are allowed to check out equipment. Students should not be allowed to move equipment on carts. Computer Usage: Indian Knoll Media Center has workstations with Internet access that may be utilized by students. Accelerated Reader and other school programs are found on each computer. Students with a signed Acceptable Use Policy may access the Internet for educational purposes only. The media specialist should be informed if a student does not have a signed Acceptable Use Policy. Library Schedule: The media center operates on a combination fixed/flexible schedule. Kindergarten classes come to the media center weekly for storytime and checkout. All other classes come to the media center for lessons each month. Lessons will last approximately 45 minutes and include time for book checkout. Teachers may also schedule a weekly time for checkout. In addition to these scheduled lessons, teachers may sign up for additional time in the media center when a lesson is not already scheduled. Sending Students to the Media Center: Students are welcome to check out books individually during regular hours with their teacher's permission. Only five students per homeroom should come at one time. If you send students to the media center other than for checkout, it is helpful to send a quick note describing the purpose of the visit (computer, silent reading, research, etc.) and how long students are expected to stay. Newspapers and Magazines: Magazines from the current school year are available for checkout using the same procedures as checkout for books. Following is a list of staff and student magazines available for checkout. Magazines for Staff 1. The Mailbox Kindergarten 2. The Mailbox Grade 1 3. The Mailbox Grades 2 – 3 4.
