Help fit reading into their schedules. Teens say they would read more if they had time. 2. Set an example. Let your kids see you reading for pleasure as often as you can. 3. Have a variety of reading materials – books, magazines, and newspapers. Check to see what disappears for a clue to what interests your teenager. 4. Let teens choose their own materials. When you’re out together, browse in a bookstore or library. Give a gift certificate or subscription as a nice way of saying, “You choose.” 5. Build on teen interests. Look for books and articles that feature favorite sports, hobbies, or music. 6. Value pleasure reading. Almost anything your teens read helps build reading skills. 7. Read books written for teens yourself. “Young adult” novels provide valuable insights into the concerns and pressures teenagers feel. You may find these books offer neutral territory where you can talk about sensitive subjects successfully. 8. Make reading aloud a natural part of family life. Share something from the newspaper or a book you’re reading – without turning it into a lesson. 9. Go “surfing for books.” Use the internet to find suggestions for books to read. (A list of reading websites is included in this packet.) 10. Keep the big picture in mind. For all sorts of reasons, some kids go through periods without showing much interest in reading. Don’t panic! Time and a few tips from this list may help to rekindle their interest. These suggestions were taken from a brochure published by Reading is Fundamental. ——————————————————————————– Sixth Grade Middle School Suggested Reading List English/Language Arts Office of Standards, Curriculum & Assessment Department of Curriculum, Instruction & School Effectiveness Title Author Shelby County Schools offers educational and employment opportunities without regard to race, color, religion, sex, creed, age, disability, national origin, or genetic information.
