Lesson on CRQ Unit 3 Clear Target: Utilize knowledge of the key events from the 1920’s and evidence from text excerpts to explain the this time as a “reactionary” period. Set: State Clear Target Brainstorm key events of 1920’s (record on document camera – no more than 1 minute) Presentation: Read Constructed Response Question aloud. o Check for Understanding: What is this prompt asking us to do? o What does it mean to be “reactionary?” Using the list of key events, model how to brainstorm ways the key event is “reactionary” using one event. o What was The Red Scare? (teacher think aloud) o How was it indicative of a reactionary response? (teacher think aloud) Guided Practice: Teacher and students choose another event. Teacher and student respond to questions together. o What was the Trial of Sacco and Vanzetti? (student think-pairshare) Teacher shares his response. Several groups of students share theirs. o How was it indicative of a reactionary response? (student thinkpair-share) Call on several groups to share their responses. o How did you choose to record your notes? o How will you use those notes to begin composing your response? Reteach content or terms as necessary. Continue to allow students to choose an event and record responses until teacher is sure that students have enough correct information. Transition into writing part of the response. o What did the prompt ask us to do? o What evidence do we have that the 1920’s were, in fact, reactionary? (allow all students to make a list of at least 3 – call on students to share) Model writing a beginning paragraph of teacher response to CRQ. o What do you notice? o What else should be included? Students write beginning paragraph of response. Teacher circulates asking questions checking for understanding. (e.g., Have you identified enough key events to satisfy the prompt? Can you tell me why event x is indicative of a reaction to World War II?...) Repeat Guided Practice using the provided documents – integrate into writing. ( What does this picture mean? How does it relate to the 1920’s? What line from this text supports reactionary ideas? How will you use evidence from the texts in your response? Do any of these documents directly relate to the key events ) Independent Practice: Complete CRQ. Closure: Give 3 examples of the reactionary mindset of the 1920’s.
