AP Calculus AB – Course Policies Mr. Montesano 2011-2012 Email: tmontesano@maine207.org Mathematics Department Phone: 847-692-8390 Course Description: Calculus AB is designed to be an introductory course equivalent to a one-semester college course in calculus. The course will begin with a review of PreCalculus topics followed by an introduction to limits and continuity, derivatives, integrals, and their applications. Supplies Needed: Students are expected to have the following supplies in class EVERYDAY ! * * * * Textbook: Calculus: Early Transcendentals 9th edition by Anton, Bivens, & Davis Pencil and/or Pen Graphing Calculator ( TI-84) Notebook Grading Procedures: Each student will earn a grade based on tests, quizzes, and assignments. Test and quiz grades will be weighted at 85% of each student's quarter grade, while assignments are weighted at 15%. Extra credit opportunities will include CLM contests, ILML contests, and Math team events. Scores will be updated on the parent portal as soon as possible. Students are to submit a copy of daily assignments which will be checked for completeness, neatness, effort, and occasionally for accuracy. A complete list of the previous night’s correct answers is provided each day. It is the responsibility of each student to check his/her homework for correctness. The course will cover 7 chapters (1-8 skip chapter 7) and there will be a test at the conclusion of each chapter. There will also be 2-3 quizzes per chapter. Tests and quizzes will be graded thoroughly. Accuracy and a student's best effort are expected to receive top scores on tests. There will be times when certain algebraic procedures are expected to be used. Students will be graded on their performance in using the correct procedures, not just whether their final answer is correct. At the end of each semester, a Final Exam will be given. A final grade will be given that combines each student's semester grade and Final Exam score. The Final Exam score will be weighted 15% of each student's final grade. A letter grade will be assigned using the following scale: Grading Scale: A = 90% - 100% B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79 % D = 60% - 69% F = 59% and below * Weighted Grades Assessments = 85% Homework = 15% Final Exam = 15% of semester grade Missing Assignments All homework assignments and tests missed due to an excused absence will be required the day following the student’s return. Extended absence work will require direct contact between teacher and student to arrange for an acceptable timeframe. Students are responsible for homework assigned on the day of the field trip. It will be due the following day. Homework assignments missed for any other reason may receive a grade of 0% . Academic Dishonesty Students are expected to complete all tests and assignments honestly and will not collaborate in dishonest actions. Students will not give or accept answers or assignments unless directed to by the teacher. Students caught cheating or plagiarizing will be subject to discipline as stated in the Student Handbook.
