President’s report from Rose Chapman
General business
• A PTSA grant has been requested by Dr. Hedrick for planners, and discussion was held. Last
year, planners were not approved for a grant. PTSA wants more information, and Rose will reach out to
the new principal to see how he would like to handle planners.
• Rose reported she attended the (City of) Kenmore Connections Workshop, at which a speaker
facilitated discussion on how to “connect to the community in small ways that make a big impact.” Rose
hopes to use this training and some of the ideas generated from it to help PTSA make a bigger impact at
KJH.
• Rose reported that the State PTA Convention was inspiring, especially a class led by Steve
Constantino, who spoke on family engagement. At the event, Cindy Jensen was awarded the Crystal
Leadership Award, one of 11 winners in the state.
• 9th-grade party update: Donna Hunter emailed Rose that that no more money has been raised;
there are 240 students and only 50 tickets have been sold. The committee is thinking about what would be
done a s a Plan B if the May 15 deadline to raise $6,000 more to reserve the Family Fun Center can’t be
met. Discussion was held.
• Bingo Night is scheduled for June 4, and people wishing to volunteer should contact Marella
Alejandrino.
• The last dance of the year is scheduled for May 29, and those wishing to volunteer should
contact Sariyeh Soltani, who has been working with the Kenmore police on providing pizza and soda for
the event.
Committee Reports
• SEC Grants have been applied for; there were eight grants approved.
• Others? -- Angie Rosette-Tavares recommends changing to Word Press program for ease of
programming for the PTSA website; the board agreed to give Angie creative freedom to build a new
program.
Planning for next year
• Gretchen Young reported that the Budget Committee is working on a proposed budget for next
year. Gretchen, Chris Koehler, Cindy Jensen, and Rose have put together a budget proposal based on this
year and last year that will end nearly $900 in the black. Item-by-item discussion was held about proposed
budget. Cindy Jensen motioned to take proposed budget to general membership for approval; the motion
was seconded and unanimously approved.
• Rose reported that next year’s board still needs to have some positions filled, including
Secretary. Sam Ames volunteered to put a notice in Lockwood’s eBlast inviting incoming parents to
attend the May 13 PTSA General Membership Meeting; Rose will send the item to Arrowhead’s PTA
and ask them to do the same. The invitation will also ask if incoming parents are interested in being on the
board.
