6th GRADE NEWSLETTER
E/LA Agenda for the week of September 2-6, 2013
Monday 9/2: School Holiday in observance of Labor Day: No classes
This week in language arts, we will continue our literary focus, discovering what common overlying theme we can extract from three different
texts and citing evidence from those texts to support our findings. We will also continue to look at story elements and point of view to
understand the author’s purpose for writing these texts. In the areas of grammar and writing, we will study the author’s use of first and third
person point of view and how pronouns aid in this writing technique. We will read an article and determine the pronouns used in the article
and the subject nouns they rename. To aid in our understanding pronouns, we will be discussing the subject/predicate parts of a sentence
and how to develop sentences guarding against run-ons and sentence fragments in our writing. This focus will enable us to see how the parts
of speech work together to help us communicate our ideas through writing, and how other writers use these techniques in their writings as
well. We will also demonstrate a working knowledge of the content-specific vocabulary that we encounter through our readings of the stories
and the article.
