Discussion
Legislative Update
Budget is tentative right now with a 0% increase recommended. We expect a 2-4%
increase which is reasonable.
Statewide voluntary preschool looking to have mandatory attendance. Any district can
complete application to become a voluntary preschool program. Right now 31
districts do not have a voluntary program, but many of those have Headstart etc.
State autism initiative to have 5 classrooms across the state. Autism – (collaboration?)
Voc Rehab will receive increase but won’t keep pace.
Plan for Interpreter
training
John, Marsha and Patrick looking at how to approach professional development for
interpreters.
John contacted EIPA (Educational Interpreter Professional Assessment)
Goal is to work with professionals to pump up professional interpreters across state,
get them certified and then continue to work with them through professional
development.

Professional development for supervisors of interpreters, educational interpreters and
supervisors of educational interpreters needed. Need to develop models for this
professional development and standardize across the state.
Planning for 2013-14
Personnel
Since last meeting, Kendra and Patrick working to develop vocational rehabilitation
counselor position which includes ISD.
One retirement – ASL position
ASL instructor – looking at need and budget to build skills that are naturally lost when
not being used.
Summer Pograms
2013-14
Eastside camp for deaf and hard of hearing will be held on Iowa Braille School campus.
14 students registered for west side summer program, but expecting about 60.
6 students registered for east side program, but hoping for 20.

Consider for next meeting:
Proposed guidelines to becoming a residential student. Modification from IBS
guidelines.
Free and appropriate and least restrictive environment
