Marsha - projects proposed and accepted :
Contract with Boys Town National Research Hospital EIPA Diagnostic Center to provide
four, four-hour, statewide, onsite trainings. (Total of 16 contact hours or 1.6 CEUs)
for all K-12 interpreters.
Contract to provide two, day-long, on-site, skill-based training (with CEUs for 1) K-12
interpreters who are not yet permanently licensed and have an EIPA score in the
range of 3.0-3.4 and for 2 K-12 interpreters who are permanently licensed and have
an E. This will be in Des Moines probably January or February. Boys Town has 4
1
workshops that are $75 each and we might help interpreters. Will send to AEA
directors. Hands and Voices would also help.
Contract with Dr. Cheryl deConde Johnson to adapt, implement and analyze the use of
the Placement and Readiness (PARC) documents. Marsha recommends pilot use of
these.
Provide basic and intermediate parent sign language training. May use the ICN.
Sign Language Proficiency Interview pilot program – evaluating the sign language
competency of staff working with deaf and hard of hearing students who sign. This
pilot with on large urban school district will provide baseline of competency. Sign
language may be different from people to people. Parents shouldn’t learn sign
language from their children. Lewis Central person in charge of interpreters doesn’t
sign. ISD would work with her to access and train the interpreters. We need someone
who is great interpreter to supervise interpreters. Cost covered by Department of
Education.

AEAs 10 & 15 are next to get training for audiologists and other staff. Then every two
weeks another AEA will be trained. Start date is November 11th
Changes in Des Moines due to special education changes. Some transitions happening,

Kenda suggested skill level test for jobs. Then take test results to future employees. We
should have a joint partnership with major employers. Connect this with information
to send to the legislature. We could name the program Skilled Iowa.
