GENERIC JOB SUMMARY GRADE: 4 DEPARTMENT/SCHOOL/UNIT: REPORT TO: JOB TITLE: Workshop/Laboratory Technician (Teaching & Research) Science Laboratories and Engineering Laboratories/Workshops JOB PURPOSE: To provide specific technical support services to academic and research staff and students so that experiments and research are completed in an efficient way. MAIN ACTIVITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Construct and modify equipment and components to a specification agreed with others. 2. Maintain, clean, repair and test equipment ensuring general workshop/laboratory tidiness 3. Ensure the general security of tools and equipment and of laboratory/workshop areas. 4. Monitor levels of stocks/stores and ensure that equipment, consumables and work area are ready to use when required. 5. Advise students and staff in the design and development of basic apparatus for research and teaching purposes or project work. 6. Set up equipment for teaching and research experiments following clear guidelines and/or procedures. 7. Carry out precision measuring/testing of equipment following clear set procedures. 8. Maintain accurate records and draft documentation and reports of conclusions. 9. Comply with Health and Safety procedures affecting self and others. 10. Carry out any other duties which are appropriate to the post as may be reasonably requested by Supervisor. PLANNING AND ORGANISING: Carry out a range of tasks, working mainly within established procedures, but with minimal supervision. Plan own work schedule, responding to new pressures, adjusting priorities as needed. Ensure that components are available so that jobs can proceed as directed. RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES (e.g. People, Finance, Equipment): Have responsibility for the security and maintenance of equipment in the laboratory /workshop/department. Support student learning through the development and demonstration of standard equipment and techniques. May provide standard guidance and advice to junior colleagues/students through on the job training. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: Daily contact with Supervisor, work colleagues, University staff and students. Some liaison with external consultants.
