Learning Outside the School
There’s been a lot of learning outside the school: students have
attended interschool debating, Yarn Up, an interschool chess
competition, the regional cross country carnival, Rugby League
Gala day (where we were the winners & runner up) and the string
festival. Indigenous students also attended the Indigenous ANZAC
service and the Koori education carnival at the University of
Western Sydney. Also band fest is on Friday.
Staffing
- Meghan Ryan has been appointed as a permanent classroom
teacher. She will start in this role in 2015. This was planned so as
to not disrupt classes. Thanks to Lisa Haller and David Lewis who
were on the on panel.
- Dora back next term. Michele Kellington and Lisa Aronis have
done a wonderful job sharing the class.
Reports
Will be going home next Wednesday. Very early next term
interviews will be scheduled.
Speech therapy
Anna Kovacs started last week. There is no cost to the school for
this service. There will be group and individual sessions available.
Parent Workshops
Miss Heath will conduct the Positive Behaviour for Learning session
next Wednesday 25 June at 3.30 and 6pm, only if there is enough
interest.
Grants
- Successful with a $5000 NRMA grant. Will support recycling bins
and serving ware for the canteen.
- The school will be applying for a community grant to refurbish
the school’s office area. Berlinda and Jennie are meeting with Zoe
Jenkins on Friday to discuss.
- The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)
Committee recently met. The school’s applying for a grant for an
Interactive Whiteboard, which costs $10 000. Canterbury
Hurlstone Park RSL has already verbally committed to donating
$10 000.
Lockdown practice
There will be a school lockdown practice next week; probably
during a break.
No hat, play in the shade
The Executive team discussed the school’s no hat, play in the
shade rule. The application of this rule varied – it wasn’t promoted
so much in winter. After discussion at the P&C it was agreed it
would be easier if the policy is applied consistently throughout the
year.
Tree safety
The tree near the playground has been approved for removal.
Car park and signing-in procedures for visitors
The use of the car park by people other than teachers was
discussed in some detail. Student welfare is paramount. It was
endorsed by the P&C that on school days only teachers should use
the car park. The signing in procedures by all visitors should be
followed by all visitors, including parent volunteers. (The sign-in
book and visitor passes are near Jennie Hanna’s office.)
Northern Beaches Christian school
Berlinda, Lisa H & Kristy Do Canto did a study tour of the school,
which has innovative learning spaces. Three more spots have been
booked for 23 July; it would be good if a parent can attend.

Canteen sub
committee report
Paul Scouller presented his report, including that funds have been
expended for the playground structure and the half share in the
water fountain. The main contributors to our funds in 2014 was the
movie night and dads’ night.
Students attended the strings concert and the senior choir
performed at the Opera House. The Engadine Band Fest is on
Friday.
Alexis Joseph and Lisa H advised that this Friday painting will start
on the background for the mural ready for unveiling on NAIDOC
night. Only a few RSVPs have been received so far; you can RSVP
electronically and the link is on the website. The entertainment is
for the whole community, not just kids. Sean Chilburra will
perform. There’ll be BBQ lamb and damper, like last year. People
are asked to bring a salad.
We were unsuccessful with our Coles Landcare grant.
There was a community meeting last week. Christine Roberts will
run some workshops with teachers and students re coastal vs bush
culture.
The clean-up on the weekend went well, and included Berlinda and
her daughter. Volunteers will paint the inside of the canteen,
hopefully during the 2nd week of the school holidays. The canteen
will have a special BBQ lunch option next week.
Garden sub committee Amanda referred to the report Natalie provided, which is on the
report
website, which includes: Green Thumbs and the vegie garden are
going well; a query about interest in the gardening bees – all
present at the P&C were keen; an update on the Indigenous and
Sensory gardens.
Events and fundraising Full report is on the website; includes Trivia night, Car Boot Sale (12
sub committee report October) and the P&C supporting a walk-a-thon or similar for end
of Term 3.
6. General business
Steve Tuften put forward a suggestion about running a group like Toastmasters for children.
Parents could participate as well as children. Steve is happy to be involved.
ACTION: Berlinda will ask teachers if there’s interest. Sadie and Nicole look after the school’s
debating club; need to consider how this fits with public speaking.
Meeting officially closed at 8.50 pm
