211 S. Lopez St. | New Orleans, LA 70119 | info@morrisjeffschool.org 504-373-6258 Morris Jeff Community School Transportation Policy Morris Jeff Transportation Request Morris Jeff Community School will provide transportation to all students whose homes are more than a reasonable walking distance, from the school. A reasonable walking distance for a student is defined as any distance not more than two (2) miles between the home and the school or one and one half (1-1/2) miles between the home and the assigned bus stop. The exception to this is for those students receiving special needs services and have an active Individual Education Plan (IEP) requirement. Bus stops are assigned by Hammond’s Transportation based on information provided on the Bus Transportation Request Form. Bus Conduct - Students who ride a bus to and from school are responsible for their actions boarding, riding, disembarking the bus, as well as waiting for and leaving the bus. The bus driver has the responsibility of maintaining orderly behavior of students on school buses and will report, in writing, all misconduct to the transportation services manager and the Principal. The Principal and his/her designees will have the authority to take appropriate disciplinary action for students engaging in misconduct on a school bus. To avoid discipline issues and to meet expectations for student behavior on the school bus, students should follow the guidelines listed below: Be respectful of the driver and other students riding the bus Remain seated at all times on the bus Keep the aisle of the bus free of all objects Respect the property and space of others Any Morris Jeff student, who is in uniform, is under obligation to the school’s behavior expectations before, during, and after school regardless of where he or she may be in public. If a child is suspended from the bus for misbehaviors, it is the responsibility of parent/guardian to arrange for the students’ transportation to school. Bus drivers will always conduct their bus to follow the Morris Jeff rules and procedures. School Bus FAQ Q: How are bus routes and walking distances established? A: Parents must complete and turn in a Bus Transportation Request Form every school year before July 1st. The form is sent to Hammond’s Transportation and routes are assigned based on your address with in the 1 ½ – two (2) mile radius from the student’s home. Q: What can a parent/guardian do if they believe that the distance from the student’s registered address to the assigned school has been calculated incorrectly and feels that the distance is over 2 miles or hazardous for the student? A: A parent or guardian may request the bus route to be checked for distance by Hammond’s Transportation and/or inspected to determine if it meets the criteria for hazardous by contacting the school office or email info@morrisjeffschool.org. Q: Can my student be dropped off at the local recreational center, daycare or other after-school program? 211 S. Lopez St. | New Orleans, LA 70119 | info@morrisjeffschool.org 504-373-6258 A: Yes, Parents should complete the transportation form and place the location in the section for daycare/alternate stop. Please note someone must be at the bus stop to receive students under the age of 10 and students are not allowed multiple bus stops. Students will ride the bus to one assigned location. Q: What happens if a parent or guardian of a student under the age of 10 is not present at the bus stop at assigned stop drop-off time? A: The bus driver will notify MJCS transportation contact. The MJCS transportation contact will attempt to reach all individuals listed on the students emergency contact form. It will be the parent or guardian responsibility to contact the driver and meet the students assigned bus at the next stop. If the parent or guardian is not reached the Hammond’s Transportation drives have the right to return the student to School or drop the student off at the local police department. Q: Can I drive my child to an alternative bus stop? A: Yes, if you miss your assigned stop. Students will be permitted to board at any other location. Q: How do I find the location of my child’s bus stop? A: You may contact the school office for the bus schedule, or log on to http://www.morrisjeffschool.org/resources. Q. Why can't you come further into my subdivision? A. The size of a school bus limits how it can be maneuvered in tight places. Most subdivisions are not designed with school bus transportation in mind. Every effort is made to keep our buses on main thoroughfares in an effort to decrease ride time. Q: Who is responsible for student safety at a school bus stop? A: Parents and guardians of students under the age of 10. Students over age 10 are allowed by state law to be dropped off at bus stops without adult supervision. Q: The bus drives right past my house. Why can't it stop at my house? A: The higher frequency of stops delays the bus by increasing the number of stops and makes the student ride time longer and the bus route inefficient. Stops are placed to be convenient for groups of students. Q: Who should I contact if the bus is running late? A: Please contact Hammond’s Transportation directly at 504-662-0621. Q. How do I register my child for transportation? A. You must fill out and turn in a bus transportation request form to the office in person, send with child in school folder or fax to 504-308-3620. Q: If my child is currently riding a bus this year do I have to apply for transportation next year? A: Yes, students must register annually to ensure they are properly assigned for bus transportation. 211 S. Lopez St. | New Orleans, LA 70119 | info@morrisjeffschool.org 504-373-6258 Students are not allowed to ride the bus until they have completed this form and received an assigned bus stop. Bus route information is also available at http://www.morrisjeffschool.org/resources.
