20a. Photosynthesis = when plants take the sun’s energy and make food and oxygen 21a. Miscellaneous = misfit, doesn’t really fit well in a group… “a drawer full of miscellaneous items” 21b. Exception = something that doesn’t “fit” - there are always “exceptions to the rule” - bats, the mammal that flies - Ostrich , a bird that doesn’t fly -Virus? Doesn’t fit Living/Nonliving - “i” before “e” except after c… What about species? Weird, huh? 31. Genus = Second-most specific level of organism classification, with few organisms. (Latin name = Genus species). 32. Kingdom = Broadest/Largest classification groups of organisms. (Bacteria, Protist, Fungi, Plant, Animal) 32a. Complex = complicated, many parts = opposite of “simple” 33. Bacteria = Single-celled organism that does not have a nucleus. (Bacteria/Monera Kingdom) 34. Protist = (Mostly single-celled) Organism that has a cell with a nucleus. 35. Fungi = Organism that absorbs nutrients from its food, and can be unicellular or multicellular. 36. Mass = How much matter (or atoms, or weight) is in an object, measured in grams. (Tool: Triple Beam Balance or scale). 37. Volume = How much space something takes up, measured in liters. (Tool: Graduated Cylinder). 38. Focus = Make the image appear more clear, less “blurry.” 39. Magnify = Make the image appear larger. 40. Function = Job (or role or task) 41. Lens = Part of microscope that magnifies the image. "The function of the lenses is to magnify the image" 42. Hypothesis = prediction -- what you think will happen and why… -- Good Washington Hypothesis = IF…THEN… BECAUSE…. 42a. “Null” Hypothesis = the “no difference” hypothesis 43. Vary = to change, be different “the weather will vary throughout the week” “answers will vary” 44. Variable = the difference - the thing that can change or be different 45. initials = the first letters of your names -- Harold Hobday = HH 46. Independent Variable = -- the “on purpose” difference -- the initial, or first difference in the set up of an experiment 47. Dependent Variable = the results, the difference you measure to see if it “depends” on the independent variable? 48. Control Group = the usual, or "normal" group, which DOES NOT receive the independent variable treatment. (so you have a "baseline" to compare in your experiment) 49. Experimental or Test Group = the group with something different done = Opposite of the control group. 50. Objective/Purpose = The goal or reason why we test something (what do we want to learn?) 51. Experimental Question = A well-thought-out question that is tested during an experiment. (AKA Testable Question. Investigates relationship between independent & dependent variables). 52. Conclusion = the answer to an experimental question 53. Procedure = step by step directions, often numbered 54. data = observations = evidence =results -- information from testing and observation (quantitative when possible )
