How to type in Japanese - Windows
First we must install it…
Step 1 Installing MS IME –Windows XP
1. Open Control Panel from Start menu
2. Open “Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options”
3. Open “Add other language.”
4. Click “Details…”
5. Click “Add..” DO NOT CHANGE default input language!
6. Select “Japanese” and “MS –IME (Microsoft IME Standard 2002)”
7. MS-IME is added.
8. Confirm the Language Bar. The language bar will appear on the taskbar at the
right lower side of the display or at the right upper side of the desktop.
How to type in Japanese
Step 2
1. Start your word processing software or E-mail software.
2. Click language mode “EN” of the Language Bar and select “Japanese” instead.
3. Language mode will change from “EN” to “JP”.
4. Click the input mode “A” and select “Hiragana”. This is the standard input method
of the Japanese language. You can also choose “Katakana” or “Kanji”, but believe me
when I say that “Hiragana” is the best input method.
5. You can now type. Try to type “hajimemashite”
6. はじめまして will appear in hiragana. It will be underlined.
7. Press enter key. The underline disappears and the words are typed!
8. Try to type a word that should be in katakana. Try “dansu”.
9. Hit space bar instead of the enter key at the end of the word… it becomes
katakana! だんす → ダンス
8. Now try to type “watashi”.
9. Again, hit space bar instead of the enter key at the end of the word… it becomes
kanji! わたし → 私
10. If there is more than one kanji for the sound, hit spacebar to choose the correct
kanji from a list.
11. Be careful, use only kanji that you know are correct!
Now you can type in Japanese!

How to type in Japanese – MAC
First we must install it…
Step 1 Installing Japanese on a MAC
1. Open up System Preferences from the Apple Menu
2. Click on “Language and Text”
3. Click on “Input Sources”
4. Click “Kotoeri” the Japanese input program. =
5. Check both “Hiragana” and “Katakana”
6. Finally check the option “Show the input method in menu bar”. It will show up in
the upper right corner of the menu bar as a flag.
How to type in Japanese

2. Click the American flag in the menu bar and select “Hiragana” instead.
This is the standard input method of the Japanese language. You can also choose
“Katakana” or “romaji”, but believe me when I say that “Hiragana” is the best input
method.
3. You can now type. Try to type “hajimemashite”
4. はじめまして will appear in hiragana. It will be underlined.
