Dear Parents/Guardians:
As mandated by the New Jersey Department of Education, all eligible students in grade 11 are required to take the High
School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) on Tuesday, March 4th (Math), Wednesday, March 5th and Thursday March 6th
(Language Arts Literacy). Based on our records all grade 11 students currently enrolled in Burlington Township High
School are required to be tested. In addition, select seniors will be taking those sections of the HSPA which they have not yet
passed. Students in grades 11 and 12 passing all sections of the test will have met one of the requirements for graduation.
HSPA preparation booklets were mailed to all 11th grade families last week. You can view these materials by going to the
HSPA link on the High School website.
Additionally, on Wednesday, March 5th and Thursday, March 6th, all students in grades 9 and 10 will be administered
the ACT Explore (grade 9) and Plan (grade 10).The ACT Explore and Plan are companion tests to the ACT, which is used
in college admissions in the same manner as the SAT. The ACT Explore and Plan test students in the areas of English,
reading, math, and science. The results of the Explore and Plan will provide students with information on their academic
strengths and areas they need to improve in, give students an idea how well they are learning the skills they will need to get
ready for college, as well as help students find careers that match their interests. For more information about the Explore or
Plan tests, go to www.actstudent.org/explore or www.actstudent.org/plan.
Although each child has different capabilities, here are some suggestions to help your student do his/her best:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Encourage your student to be serious about the tests.
Try not to have any upsetting situations before the test.
Have your student get a good night’s sleep before the tests and eat properly the day of the tests.
Have your student arrive at school on time. Testing will begin promptly at 7:20 and late arrivals will have
to make up those tests missed.
All students are required to bring their calculators for the math section on Tuesday (juniors/seniors) or
Thursday (sophomores/freshmen).
Please reinforce with your student that no electronic devices, including cell phones, food or drink are permitted in testing
rooms. Per the New Jersey Department of Education, students found in possession of cell phones or other electronic
devices while taking the HSPA will have their test voided.
We will be receiving a home report of the test scores along with our other scoring services in June. As soon as these home
reports are available to us, we will send them to you and you will then have a record of your child’s achievement on this
year’s tests. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Counseling Office at 387-1713, ext.5.
Sincerely,
James S. Mills
