CHYS 2P15 Placement Opportunities at the Learning Disabilities Association of Niagara Region LDANR provides opportunities for placement students to work with individuals who learn differently because of a learning disability and /or Attention Hyperactivity Deficit Disorder, which often result in struggles with social, emotional and/or learning challenges. The following are a list of opportunities within our programs for children, youth and adults. There are also opportunities outside of programs if you are interested in learning more about the nonprofit sector. Reading Rocks! Thinking of becoming a teacher? Here’s an experience you likely won’t get in other placement opportunities! One-on-one literacy tutoring program where you are trained on LD/ADHD basics and how to put together an individualized literacy program for children between the ages of 5 – 16. This is a great opportunity for individuals hoping to get into the teaching field. This program is offered in the Fall for 8 weeks (Oct – Dec) and winter (Feb – Apr) usually Tuesday/Thursday’s from 6 – 7pm in St. Catharines, Welland, Niagara Falls and Beamsville. ** Fall Dates/Locations: October 4 – November 24, 2011 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) St. Catharines (Brock, Briardale Elementary School) Welland Beamsville Niagara Falls October 3 – December 7, 2011 (Mondays and Wednesdays) Brock only Reading Rocks! Junior Reading Rocks Junior will provide support to kindergarten age children who have fallen behind their peers in literacy. While participating in Reading Rocks Jr., children will work on increasing their literacy skills within a small group setting and an opportunity to work 1-1 in the area of their greatest need. Volunteers will run workstations and provide 1 – 1 support to children throughout this 8-week program. ** Fall Dates/Locations: October and November (Oct. 3rd to Nov. 16th ) 10 Volunteers/placement students needed! Niagara Falls (two locations) Tentatively: Mon/Wed 6 – 7 B.E.S.T. (Better Emotional & Social Times) is our social skills program for children 6 – 11 years. Through small group instruction children work on their social skills by role-playing, discussing issues, and completing hands-on activities while facilitated by a program facilitator and supported by volunteers. Topics such as self-advocacy, manners, listening, communication, respect, dealing with frustration and more are covered through this 8 – week program. This program is offered in the Fall (Oct – Dec), winter (Feb – Apr) and spring (Apr – June) from 6:00-7:30pm every week. Usually offered in St. Catharines only. Your role in BEST would be the role our volunteers play – providing support where needed. ** Fall Dates/Locations: October 5 – November 23, 2011 (Wednesdays) St. Catharines (exact location TBA) S.T.E.P.S. (Social Teen Empowering Program to Succeed) is our social skills program for adolescents. A great experience for those who want to work with adolescents! Through small group instruction youth work on their social skills by role-playing, discussing issues, and completing hands-on activities while facilitated by a program facilitator and supported by volunteers. Topics such as self-advocacy, organization, study habits, communication, dealing with frustration and more are covered through this 8 – week program. This program is offered in the Fall (Oct – Dec), winter (Feb – Apr) and spring (Apr – June) from 6:00-7:30pm every week. Usually offered in St. Catharines only. Your role in STEPS would be the role our volunteers play – providing support where needed and being a role model. ** Fall Dates/Locations: October 5 – November 23, 2011 (Wednesdays) St. Catharines (exact location TBA) Our association provides an excellent opportunity for placement students to gain experience working with children and youth, experience teaching literacy, numeracy and coaching in social skills. Come join our team and start making an impact in the lives of children and their families while gaining great experience! Must have a police clearance. Please note that all our strong placement students receive reference letters for their commitment and hard work. As well an annual appreciation event is held to thank our amazing placement students!
