Extra Curricular - Mathematics
Key Stage 5




University enrichment event - We attend an Enrichment Event annually for Year 12 A level
Maths students. This is timed to take place after the summer exams, and extends the work they
have covered as well as enhance it. This event is based at the University of Bath, to give students
university experience, just prior to many of them applying for university after the summer
holidays. Lecturers from the Universities of Warwick, Bath and Plymouth, as well as from A level
Examination Boards, have helped make this event a success.
STEP - We support students taking Oxbridge entrance exams.
UK Senior Maths Challenge - A national competition organised through Leeds University. It is
aimed at the top 25% of students in each age category. A student may be awarded a Gold, Silver
or Bronze award depending upon their individual performance. If a student gains sufficient
marks, he/she will be invited to take part in following rounds of the competition.
UK Senior Maths Team Challenge – The Wiltshire round of this competition is held at
Hardenhuish School. In each team there are usually 2 students from Year 12 and two from Year
13.
Key Stage 4

Termly Puzzles - To help our students prepare for the UK Maths Challenges and to extend their
problem solving skills we have a termly puzzle.

Enrichment Seminars – Events organised through the Further Mathematics Support
Programme which is based here at Hardenhuish School. These events have outside speakers and
explore A level topics, as well as how Mathematics is used in industry and everyday life. Previous
guest presenters have included Dr. Ted Graham from the University of Plymouth, Professor Chris
Budd from the University of Bath and the inspirational Ben Sparks. Feedback received from
pupils and teachers is extremely positive, with many pupils reporting they are now more likely to
study maths at A-level.
UK Intermediate Maths Challenge – A national competition organised through Leeds
University. It is aimed at the top 25% of students in each age category. A student may be awarded
a Gold, Silver or Bronze award depending upon their individual performance. If a student gains
sufficient marks, he/she will be invited to take part in the next round of the competition.

Key Stage 2 Primary provision



Termly Puzzles - Every term a range of brainteasers are available for all primary school pupils.
Selected carefully to be accessible to all pupils, these are an optional extra for students to get
thinking mathematically.
Primary school visits - A key part of our work is to promote Maths in local primary schools by
visiting them! Each week a member of staff will take a lesson in one of our feeder primary schools
and give pupils a taste of Maths in secondary school. Pupils love being visited and seeing how the
Maths they will learn can be used in real life. They also get a flavour of how they will be stretched
when they enter Year 7!
Primary pupils visit Hardenhuish - A number of events are run annually for keen primary
school pupils to visit Hardenhuish and meet like-minded mathematicians. Ranging from solving
murder mysteries to our famous competition morning, there really is something for everyone!
It’s always fantastic to see the pupils learning new concepts and putting existing understanding
into action.
