Mathematics The school recently purchased ‘Target Your Maths’. We will be following this scheme in our day-to-day mathematics teaching. General order is as follows: geometry, algebra, statistics/measurement, fractions , calculations. and ratio. Friday morning will continue to be multiplication tests/work and mental maths. Maths investigations and enrichment will be a part of Forest School, Friday afternoons and other cross-curricular activities. PSHE Children will continue to follow ‘Values Education’. Assembly themes will be followed up in class. Links with the local community will continue through the weather station and Friday afternoon activities. Healthy living and ‘Respect Yourself’ activities will be covered in the science work. Design & Technology and IT In their Friday afternoon sessions children will learn basic programming. They will use a ‘MakeyMakey’ to design and make interactive games, musical instruments and fun toys. Children will continue to use the internet to research topics. ‘Purple Mash’ will be used to construct graphs and charts relating to the body and healthy living. Children will be given the opportunity to present their work using powerpoint and templates from a variety of software. Forest School Children will construct 3 D shapes from willow and learn about their properties. Children will undertake a variety of exercises using parts of their body, e.g. measuring their pulse rate before and after exercise. Results will be recorded and the data used to make graphs and charts. Children will make simple gadgets used in Ancient Egypt, such as a shaduf and sundial. They will learn how paper was made and what was used to paint hieroglyphs. Exploring the senses pupils will be given team activities such as blindfolded trust challenges, listening challenges and cooperation. English Myths and Legends from Ancient Egypt will be used as starting points for written work. Children will research Ancient Egypt and use a variety of writing genres to demonstrate their knowledge. All children will take part in the Shrewsbury Bookfest ‘authors in school’ week. We will be visited by author Mo O’Hara and the Vamos Theatre Group (see dates on website. Year 5 and 6 children will take part in the main Shrewsbury Bookfest. Written activities will be based around the six books chosen by Bookfest organisers. Running alongside the theme of Ancient Egypt, children will learn about the body, healthy living and nutrition. Texts to inspire writing will include performance poetry and ‘The Latke Who Couldn’t Stop Screaming’ by Lemony Snicket. Ancient Egypt and The Body Spring 2015 History and Geography The term will start with a study of Ancient Egypt. In particular their achievements and their place in history. We will be visiting Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery to see the current Egyptian exhibition and take part in an Egyptian workshop. Pupils will build on their knowledge of continents, countries, rivers and landmarks. They will explore types of settlements and land use e.g. the importance of the Nile to the Ancient Egyptians and the distribution of food in today’s world. Homework Multiplication tables, reading, Education City and spellings will continue as in the autumn term. Science Linking with Ancient Egypt, children will learn about the similarities and differences between human beings and be able to identify parts of the body, both internally and externally. They will explore the senses and learn about the effect of exercise on the human body. Hygiene, healthy teeth, digestion and a healthy diet will be a part of their topic work. The movement of humans will be compared to that of animals and children will learn about skeletons and the different structures of animals. Spellings and Grammar Comprehension activities and reading different texts form an integral part of many lessons. All of this is monitored carefully by teachers and support staff. In addition, there is a quiet reading time every day. Each Monday the children will be given spellings to learn. The children will have a spelling test using these words, in their own sentence, on a Monday. This helps the children with their spelling, punctuation, comprehension and concentration. Punctuation and grammar is planned into written work and short, daily grammar/ punctuation activities. Art Children will explore the art work of the Ancient Egyptians. They will learn about still life artists such as Cezanne and make sketches/ paintings/pastels of fruit. Religious Education ‘Open The Book’ performances will continue on Wednesdays. In their Friday afternoon sessions children will research St James in order to make a collage to be displayed in Cardington Church. Children will learn about Judaism. They will compare Jewish festivals and find out about synagogues. The term starts with Christingle celebrations and ends with our Easter service in St Peter’s church.
