Monroe County Math League All Star Meet Proctoring Instructions MORNING *** Students may use NYS Regents approved calculators (NO CAS systems.) POWER QUESTION Approximately 9:50–10:40 The Power Question is a set of problems (possibly) involving several branches of mathematics. The problem will require in-depth analysis and mechanics. The solution should be a comprehensive presentation of thought, justification of conclusion and systematic layout of work. The entire team (15) will receive the question (15 copies) in a sealed envelope and will be given 50 minutes to work together to prepare a single solution for the team. The team may organize itself to work on the problem in any manner it chooses; often, the question lends itself to “chunking” tasks, where subteams work on various parts of the problem. The Power Question is worth 50 points. Points will be awarded for correctness, completeness, clarity, conciseness, etc. The team must have its solution sealed in the envelope, ready for collection, at the end of the 50 minute time limit. PROCTOR: You will pick up the Power Question in the Gym at the conclusion of the general morning session. Be sure to pick up the envelope of the school that you are proctoring. The lists of schools is found in the folder you were given when you arrived. YOU WILL NOT BE PROCTORING YOUR OWN SCHOOL Take the Power Question to the appropriate room. Once the students are settled, please read the following instructions to the students: 1. A number (not school name) identifies your team on the question envelope. Your team is to place that number on its solution pages. School names should not appear anywhere on the Power Question solution. 2. The only acceptable aids during the Power and Team questions are your approved calculators, scrap paper and writing utensils. No other aid (including but not limited to textbooks, cell phones and PDA’s) will be tolerated. Advisors and some other math league representatives will be spot checking. If a team is found in violation, that team will be disqualified for the remainder of the day. So please, turn off your cell phones and put away any other work. 3. Your team will be given a 10-minute and, then, a 2-minute warning. 4. Your team must have its solution sealed in the envelope, ready for collection, at the end of the 50 minute time limit. You should give students a 10-minute and, then, a 2-minute warning. The students must hand in the envelope at the end of the 50 minutes. PLEASE spot check twice to ensure compliance with rules. Monroe County Math League All Star Meet Proctoring Instructions AFTERNOON ***NO CALCULATORS ARE ALLOWED DURING AFTERNOON ROUNDS! INDIVIDUAL QUESTIONS & RELAYS Proctors: PLEASE GO TO THE ROOM WHERE YOUR OWN TEAM IS!! You need a stopwatch or a timer that counts down (it's just easier that way.) We have tried to place new proctors in a room with an experienced proctor. If you are new, please see a proctor that has done this before to clarify instructions. If you are experienced, please note the relay scoring – only 5 points, 3 points or 0 points. Get to the room before students arrive. There will be runners who will deliver the questions to the room. The same runner will be collecting the answers throughout the afternoon. You will also receive an answer sheet for all the individual questions and relays. DO NOT LET STUDENTS SEE THIS! The students should sit in groups of three, in the order of their relay teams. INDIVIDUAL QUESTIONS Approximately 12:00–1:00 1. Once the students are settled, the “head” proctor should read the instructions for the individual questions: a. The individual questions are 10 short answer questions (grouped in 5 pairs) worth one point each. b. Each team member participates individually with his/her scores contributing to the team score. c. You will have 10 minutes to complete each pair of questions, with a 2-minute and 30second warning. 2. For each pair of individual questions, the “head” proctor should: a. Hand out the set of individual questions to proctors to distribute. b. Give students 10 minutes. Give a 2-minute warning and a 30-second warning, then pencils down. c. After answers are collected and returned to appropriate envelope, read each answer to students. Proctors should count how many students on their team think they got each answer correct and record it on the front of the envelope – this is used as a double check in the grading room. Monroe County Math League All Star Meet Proctoring Instructions RELAYS Approximately 1:10–1:30 1. Once the last pair of Team questions is complete, read the instructions for the relay questions: a. There are two separate relay events. Each event is composed of three problems presented to each of five 3- person sub-teams. The first person on each sub-team answers the first problem and passes the answer back to the second person. The second person uses the answer received from the first person to answer the second problem and then passes his answer back to the third person. The third person uses the answer received from the second person to answer the third problem and then submits this answer to the proctors. b. You are only allowed to pass a numeric value to the person after you. You may not pass anything to the person before you. c. You have 6 minutes. Correct answers turned in by the 3 minute mark are worth 5 points. Correct answers turned in by the 6 minute mark are worth 3 points. d. You may turn in as many answers as you desire, but only the last answer turned in will be graded – all other answers will be discarded. Be sure your answer sheet has team name and letter on it. Raise your hand to turn in your answer as soon as you are ready, since time determines your points scored. e. You will receive a 15 second warning for each point value ending time. 2. For each relay, the proctors should: a. Make sure the first and second students have papers for passing an answer to second and third students, respectively. b. Make sure third person has answer sheets for turning in to proctor and has recorded the team name and letter on the answer sheet. c. Collect answer sheets as turned in, circling the time frame. Discard any previous answer sheet any time a new answer is turned in. You do NOT need to check the answer on the paper turned in – that will be done in the grading room. d. When the relay is done, all final answer sheets should be placed in the correct envelope – do NOT send more than one answer sheet per 3 person team. When all students are done, teams report back to the Student Life Center for the closing activities. If any envelopes have not been picked up by runners, please get them to the grading room as soon as possible.
