Mrs. Abney’s 9th Grade English Disclosure Document : sabney@alpinedistrict.org 801-610-8777 ext. 203 Goal: Through consistent attendance of my English class, each student will receive an equal opportunity to learn and develop skills necessary to enable him or her to be a good global citizen. Additionally, this course will concentrate on the academic language, speaking - listening, reading and writing skills which students need to obtain successful results in all aspects of their schooling. BEFORE class begins each day. Students will be given participation points for this assignment. Books are available from my classroom library or the school media center. Grading: Students will be evaluated on the basis of class preparation (English binder and pen or pencil), assignments, homework and tests. Most activities will be completed in class. Occasionally homework will be assigned to help you build on what we learned in class. Make Up Work: Assignments, tests and quizzes missed due to an EXCUSED absence must be made up within one week of the due date for full credit unless otherwise specified by me. Grading breakdown will be as follows: A BD+ 93-100% 80-82% 67-69% AC+ D 90-92% 77-79% 63-66% B+ C D87-89% 73-76% 55 - 62% B CF 83-86% 70-72% 54% - or lower Materials: Personal Reading Book Lined Paper Pencil I will provide a journal and folder for each student. Expectations: This class is run on a policy of mutual respect. I will always respect you and your work. I expect you to do the same for me and the other students in class. A few rules will apply. Cellphones ARE allowed in my class as an educational tool. I will specify when it is permissible to use phones to do research in my classroom. If phones are being used during regular class time, I will confiscate the phone and take it to the office. Food, candy and drinks need to stay out of the classroom and must be consumed in the cafeteria. Water bottles are allowed. All class procedures should be followed to insure an optimum learning environment. Ongoing Reading Assignment: Students become better writers by reading outside of class. However, students will not be graded on outside reading. Instead, I will provide 10-15 minutes every day for students to read in class. Students are expected to have their own book Late Work: Late work is accepted up to one week before the end of the term. 10% will be deducted for every week late. Citizenship: I will adhere to the school policy regarding tardies and absences. What you can expect of me: I love teaching. I love being in the classroom with students. I want to help you feel comfortable and safe in my classroom. I hope to help you learn critical thinking skills that will help you throughout your life. I will be prepared daily and will give lessons that I believe will help you build character plus be relevant to your life, not only in school but outside of school as well. Get ready for a great rest of the school year, and to have loads of fun through many diverse classroom activities! Classroom Discipline: The penalties for minor infractions, such as continuous talking, distracting others, and/or non-compliance will result in the following: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Verbal warning Separation from rest of students Seat change Removed from classroom In school suspension, plus call home, teacher letter or email home Good behavior is always expected in class. If students need a reminder, I will give them a warning, and it is expected that inappropriate behavior will stop immediately following the warning.
