Lunch Monitors Needed
We are still in need of lunch monitors to help supervise the children during lunch hours. This
is a paid position! You do not need to commit to 5 days a week – Any time you are able to
spare would be a great help.
Curriculum Night
It was great to see so many parents come out for our curriculum night and ice cream social!
Thank you all for taking the time to come in and see what’s happening in our classrooms.
Buffalo Club Breakfast Program Donation
A huge thank you to the Buffalo Club for their generous donation to our breakfast program! We
feed a large number of children each morning, and this donation will help us continue to do so.
Youth Running Series Race – Saturday, October 10 –
2:00pm Acadia University (Click for link)
ALL FULL SERIES MEMBERS HAVE TO REGISTER ON THE VALLEY HARVEST WEBSITE!
This is a great event that many from Tallahassee attend. The Kids Run is open to all children up to, and
including, age 12. The minimum requirement for those children aged 5 and under is that they be able to
run/walk 400 meters unassisted. All races will take place on/around the Acadia track. All Kids Run
participants will be treated to complementary drinks and refreshments after they finish their race! All
participants will also receive finish line goodies at the end of their race.
Tallahassee’s PTO Fundraiser
The Tallahassee PTO has once again teamed up with Lamontagne Fundraising to bring you a wonderful
catalogue with lots to choose from – Holiday Gifts, Cards, Calendars, Gift Wrap, Jewellery, Care and
Cosmetics and Everyday Essentials. There is something for everyone here! There are 4 online
catalogues that you can also order from at http://www.lamontagne.ca/en/Schools/BrochureSale.html.
This campaign is our largest fundraising effort of the school year and every dollar raised helps support all
of the great things the PTO does for our school. Where does your money go you ask? To such things as
in-class support material for teachers, special events and activities to be enjoyed by the entire student
body, extra sports equipment for the school, promotional items for Anti-Bullying awareness, and much
more to say the least. Please be sure to share with your friends, family members, and neighbours and
ask them to help support our great school!
This week you should have received a package that contains the catalogues, order form & envelope and
the kids prize sheet. All orders must be returned to the school no later than Wednesday, October 14th
by the end of the school day (2:30 pm). Orders should arrive back to the school by mid-November, and
will be sent home with students. Please be sure to only take the green copy of the order form and
return the other three copies along with all of the money collected for the order(s), in the envelope
provided in the fundraising package. Cheques should be made out to TALLAHASSEE COMMUNITY
SCHOOL.
Head Lice
Head lice make an appearance in schools every year. If your child happens to come in contact with lice we
do the following…
1. Students who are suspected of having live lice will be sent home for treatment with
parent(s)/guardian(s). Once your child is treated and there are no signs of live lice they can return to
school. If live lice are present the child must stay home.
2. Students who are suspected of having nits may remain at school.
If you are looking for some light reading and for current information about head lice please click the
following links from the NS Department of Health and Wellness.

Counsellor’s Corner – Managing Disappointment
We want our children to feel the world is open to them, that they can achieve their
dreams and be who they want to be. However, we also need to give them the tools to
handle it when things don’t go their way. Being disappointed sometimes is part of life,
and protecting them from this will not help them feel strong and resilient. It is not
realistic or helpful to recognize every positive move that a child makes. In fact, the risk
is that they will learn to only do things if they will get an external reward, rather than
because it is the right thing to do. This can actually erode self-esteem and selfconfidence, and make success meaningless. Your child needs to know that the world will
not end if she didn’t get chosen for something, and that he’s not a failure if he didn’t get a
reward for an achievement. You can help children learn to manage disappointment
through

Helping them name and discuss their feelings

Helping them give themselves messages like, “My teacher still likes me, even if I didn’t
get a ribbon this month”

Focusing on developing an internal sense of pride

Holding them to realistically high standards

Being supportive without being overprotective
Success and recognition will truly feel even sweeter for your children if balanced by
occasional disappointment.
Literacy Tips
Using a few simple strategies will make a significant difference in helping your children
develop into good writers.
Write Notes! Write a personal note to your child/children. Just a few words tucked in a lunch
box or left under a pillow can be a wonderful surprise. Encourage them to write a response back.
Math Tips
Parents of young children can provide number and counting opportunities by:

Singing counting rhymes with their children.

Making personal counting books with their children where each page describes
something about the children, such as Sue has 1 nose, Sue has 2 eyes…

Naming numerals that their children see in books, pictures etc…
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
Natasha Decoste from the Military Family Resource Center will be conducting
child friendly presentations this school year to help support students who have
family members serving in the Military. Presentations may include talks about
deployment, reunion, moving and other challenges military families may face.
If you feel your child could benefit from this, please fill out the following form and
return it to their teacher ASAP.
Any questions or concerns can be directed to the School Counsellor Donna
Meaney phone 465-8006 or email dmeaney@hrsb.ca
I would be interested in having my child attend child friendly military
presentations.
